Hankook Winter iCept EVO2 W320

Well the WS60s have well and truly been used up so the search began for a new set of winter tires. I ended up selecting the Hankooks due to the V rating, but I'm not 100% sure how they will work in the Missouri "it changes every five minutes" winter weather patterns.

They were inexpensive though - $97 each. But added to that is TPMS sensors since the WS60s are 10 plus years old and the sensors were for an '08 135i.

Will update as I accrue mileage.

I just picked up 225/45/17 Continental T860s, was rated one of the "best" locally in Germany. I am very interested in Hankook tires, from track day tires, to summer to winter (when i get 17" summer wheels).

Interested in your feedback.

The tires finally came in and had them installed. 215/45-17 91V, so I can be a bit more irresponsible with them than the Q rated Blizzacks.

Wasn't very cold today and of course, the mold release compound needs to wear off, but I can say they are very quiet. Tread seems to be optimized for minimal noise. They 'feel' better than the Blizzacks, but that ain't saying much.

Suspect they won't be as good in the snow as the WS60s were, but I'm retired and if it snows heavily I don't have to go out - I keep an ample supply of milk and bread handy (nah, it's really beer) for that reason alone.

Another update - actually pretty decent, turn-in is good, some issues with slipping under WOT (sheesh whouda thunk that would happen with snow tires). Handling is much better than the WS60s.

When I put the WS60s on it was like the car had to go into hibernation. I think the W320s may be ideal for the winter conditions we normally see in western Missouri. More to come . . .

May i ask why 215s? do you usually get really thick snow in the winter?

The rims are Moda 11s - 17x7.5 so 215/45 is the sweet spot for the rims. I thought about 205, but was told that that was too narrow - I could have gone to 225 but tire availability is an issue at 225/40 17 for snows (read, "price is too high for a 3 month of the year use" ;-).

We get really odd weather in the winter here. It's not like Chicago which is further north and is subject to lake effect snow, but we can get 6 or more inches at a time with mild weather in between snow and ice events. It isn't very consistent year in year out - we've had some really nasty snows in the last 4 years, but again they're bookended by mild weather. I worry mostly about ice in KC since we tend to hover around the freezing mark most of the winter.

We got four inches of snow over a sheet of ice yesterday (and I actually mowed the yard Saturday to mulch leaves - gotta love Missouri weather). Took the car out this morning The street in front of the house is packed snow over ice - pretty slick, and has three fairly steep hills to navigate up to get out of the subdivision.

The W320s had no problems at all - more than adequate. Running at about 20 mph I never saw the TC lamp light. Braking did provoke the ABS however - but no drama.

All in all, they're keepers.
