That's great, but it doesn't seem to have the "right" sound for me, and I don't want to pay $400-odd dollars for something that isn't just right. But, I'll do more looking and try to find more sound clips of it...

chris. I just removed the outer tray to my airbox and think it makes a great sound. Now I'm thinking of cutting up the tray so that I can use both sides to once again hold the filter, yet leave a nice big opening at the front to get that sound. I think someone on this board did something similar on this board, but I cant find the pic.
Note: I used to have the injen intake and this open box sounds far better. Just the right amount of sound. No drone and no weird honking noises at 3k. |

I did the same thing as post #36. separated the airbox, then used some screws and washers to old the air filter onto the back half of the airbox. Its a ghetto approach but it delivers on sound. And apparently has negligible heat issues above 25mph (i.e when the car is moving). 30 minutes and $2 in parts. And its reversible, so why not? I'll admit is a bit louder at 4k than I would like but it is a good sound. If I find some time I may try the dinan-type mod using a snorkel to the air-duct. I imagine that would be the best of both worlds.

I ended up putting the stock airbox back in since the half-box approach was a bit too loud and prone to the filter flapping around under load. So I simply bored the 3" hole in the side and ran the flex pipe down to the front bumper.
Sounds quieter again, but with a bit more noise than before. |

Unfiltered air in your air box. Don't drive in rain, dust, sleet, snow...

OK, stay tuned for some pics and comments, but I recently installed the injen CAI for the N52. Let me finish the install and modifications I have to make and I'll post up.
Took the 128 for a test drive after the initial test install, glorious noise... Last edited by olds350; 10-01-2018 at 09:44 AM.. |

I would like some more engine noise from the front of this car. If I get the BMS cowl, will I hear a lot more noise? Anyone with the N52 can confirm?

Wanted to post some pics of injen CAI I just wrapped up installing on the 128 N52. First let me say, I'm not usually one to go spend a ton of bucks on something that basically just makes sound, but the 128 in stock form is just too damn quiet, lacked some of that visceral element that makes it a BMW. I also remember my '96 e36 I had for 8 years and put almost 200k miles on it. In the later part of it's life, I ran a CAI and it was fun to hear. Now I have that experience back for the 128.
I've been following this thread for a while and looked at the aFE intakes and just wasn't willing to spend ~$450 on the intake. I found a webpage on line via google that talked about adding HP to the lowly N52 and one of the items they mentioned was the injen intake. I started looking and found one on amazon for ~270 plus tax, not too bad. Even has a stat sheet showing 6hp and 8ft/lb of torque gain. I can tell you now I can't feel it in the butt dyno, but damn does this sound good. A few things about this CAI. It needed a few mods from my perspective to make this a safe install. First, let me show you what came in the box... I wanted the black tube version, but it wasn't available at the cheaper price point, so I'm ok w/ the chrome version. I first thing I didn't like was you had to unhook the heater hose from the frame rail. That needed to be fixed. I took some plumbing strap and added some heat shrink tubing to it and placed it over the studs on the frame rail. Once the heat shield is in place with the supplied nuts for the studs, the hose is secured as well. I left the original hose clamps in place in case I ever remove the CAI There were also a few things that needed to be adjusted with the heat shield. I did have to notch the back side of the head light to remove some plastic so the shield would drop into place. Sort of a bad pic, but you'll see what I trimmed if you install this. Now that the heat shield drops into place, the angle of the shield lays right beside the upper rad hose connection and I wasn't digging that at all. I cut the weld on the shield and bent the flap towards the fender a bit. That cleared the hose clamp and no more rubbing. It's was a bit "fiddly" getting the rubber mounting hose on the TB, but I got that installed. What I also didn't like was the fact there was nothing supporting the free end of the CAI, so I ran a black zip tie from the PS reservoir support and around the tube for some stability. Not pretty, but it's a bit more functional and adds support. Here's a pic of the stock airbox and the new CAI. I'm liking the CAI look better... Noise, intoxicated noise.... My gas mileage is going to go down at least for the first week or so listening to this new induction siren singing her sweet song. The newness will pass, but I have to say at WOT, it's worth the money. As for normal driving, you can hear a hint of the intake and at 3000rpm, it starts to talk to you, but in my normal driving and with the automatic, the engine never sits a 3k, so that buzz is no impact to me. If interested, I can try and post up a video of the cabin sound. |

You can simply remove the cowl tray, then just bolt the standard air filter in. No worries about water dripping into the HVAC system and grenading stuff that requires the removal of the dashboard.

Moving this from the "What did you do to/for your 1'er today?" thread.
More progress on the velocity stacks today. Sorta determined that I'll have a base plate with adapters 3D-printed, then put on a silicone coupler and some aluminum stacks. The plan is to convert to Euro 330i IAT sensor, do a TB delete (cheap S54 ITB's might be a possibility), and do a PCV delete (catch can with a filter on the exhaust). I need to see how other cars with ITB's and such deal with vacuum, that's my main concern/dilemma... Aluminum Stacks: http://www.velocity-of-sound.com/com...rchant_id=2107 Silicone Tubing: http://www.siliconeintakes.com/silic...ose-p-195.html A photo from SketchUp:

New Plan (after more R&D):
-S54 ITB's (For safety; in case Valvetronic fails) -3D-Printed Adapter (Adapt N52 head ports to S54 ITB's and add 30-degree bend for hood clearance) -MAF replaced by MAP (I think) -PCV heater delete (No need to get recall done) -CCV system modifications (Routed to catch can with vent to atmosphere; no recirculation to intake) -Custom tune by hassmaschine Maybe I'll do MILV's while I'm at it...

A 3D printed adapter is simply not going to work. It will not last since I doubt you're going to be printing in a material suitable for engine use. At least switch to Fusion 360. Sketchup js horrible for this scale of stuff.
I'll just ignore all the negatives velocity stacks come with. I'm confused WTF you're even doing at this point. I feel like you need an intervention.

That's the whole point. It's an ongoing project. I'm trying new things, finding out how they work, and then changing things around to eventually find what is juuust right for me. Maybe 3D printing won't work in the long run, but that's the point of 3D printing; rapid, inexpensive prototyping for a final product. At the very least, it'll be perfect for determining fitment. Maybe SketchUp isn't the absolute best thing to use, but it's what I'm comfortable with, it's what I have, and it works well for me. The point of this is to get a more enjoyable sound out of this car, and I just don't want a super shouty exhaust to achieve that. The point of this is not power, it would be a great side benefit, but it is certainly not the focus of this. Why do I need an intervention for wanting to make my car perfect for my needs and wants? You are the one that needs an intervention, for feeling the need to criticize a unique project (it doesn't matter if it's mine), that someone finds joy in. At least I'm not like a majority of the other lumps my age (17) that would spend all this time I've spent, with their noses stuck in someone else's business, diving head-first into the useless, tasteless world of Snapchat. Feel free to question my methods, my tools, but don't question why I'm doing it, it doesn't matter, I'm doing something. EDIT: To add on; this is an overall problem with car culture today (and everything, really), everything is factionized and divided, everyone hates what everyone else does, especially if it's different. ThatDudeInBlue is a huge supporter of unique (strange, perhaps) projects, and I think it's awesome how those owners take something uninteresting, and turn it into a spectacular project that they enjoy (look at the Saturn SL2 he recently reviewed). I don't mean to call you the problem, I'm simply calling out the problem.

^ this. I'm with chris_flies. Having been on car and moto forums for 15 years the best threads happened b/c someone voiced an idea, others chimed in with ideas & suggestions. Keep your criticism & insults... there are a few builds I did in the face of criticism. Almost all of them worked out great.
If you have ideas, suggestions or warnings based on facts or experience, by all means post them up. But don't just criticize what someone is trying to do for fun b/c you don't like it.

If you get the S54 ITB working on the N52, you'll make a lot of people happy. Me first. Lol I've started entertaining this idea a few weeks back but I feel it's way out of my capacity to tackle such a project. I have no 3D skills, no access to machining tools, etc... I've been following the other thread over at e90post where someone is working on this too (Hass?) |
