In Mass, auto insurance rates have to be approved by the state.

"Companies that sell auto insurance in Massachusetts are free to set their own rates, but the state insurance commissioner has the authority to review them to make sure they aren’t excessive, in which case approval can be withheld."

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/05/...ffice-objects/

My rates were essentially identical for my renewal that just came last month.

(That said, surcharges for tickets/accidents stay on your insurance for 6 years).

Many insurers have sent out emails blaming state laws for these increases, however, I can't really find evidence that this is true and it seems like rates are increasing in most states at levels that are not easily explained by mandatory minimum coverage increases. My guess is that rising average claim cost is driving this, but they are also gouging wherever possible.

I'm with Erie and haven't had but a few point increase over the last few years. I've been with most companies at one point or another but they are by far the most fair.

State Farm was the worst for large increases when compared apples to apples. The last massive raise was the reason I left. With two small biz, 9 cars/trucks, home and umbrella policy's you better believe I'll shop around. This is the first company I haven't felt the need to shop.

Our agent is top notch as well, they even helped us figure out how to deal with my MILs total home loss due to fire that Liberty Mutual was giving the run around on. He even checked in every now and then to see how they were doing. Needless to say that is who they insure with now as well.

Basically Progressive, State Farm and Geico all had the worst rates residential and commercial. State Farm was the worst for businesses coverage and were extremely picky about what you could and couldn't do.

Grange wasn't too bad.

Erie for the overall win!

The Zed is insured with Progressive. Top policy, high deductible, married old fart, employed, home owner, no claims, no tickets, many years with them, etc. The renewal was on 1 August, exactly the same as six months ago.

The Fireblade is with State Farm. Same stuff as above. The policy was renewed in May, exactly the same premium as in November 2022.

I'm in MA and saw a similar increase.

It seems odd all these insurance carriers are doing it exactly the same time. I understand their cost structure may have changed, but for all of them to arrive at the same determination to push through significant price increases all at the same time is fishy. If I'm a business and feel the need to raise my prices to cover costs, I'd be concerned I'll drive customers away, unless somehow I knew all my competitors are doing the same thing. Seems like collusion, no?

That's normal. Typically insurance companies increase your premiums on the 2nd or 3rd year, it's just a matter of time. The first year will almost always be your cheapest one. That's why you need to shop around. I usually do it annually to keep the competition going. And a good driving record is your best friend...

Looking through my the past 3 years of my insurance billing with State Farm, I've seen the biggest increases with my autos: 2019 C-HR, 2013 135i, and 1997 F150. With the biggest increase being my Toyota daily beater. Clean driving record with no recent at fault wrecks. Although my Toyota has had two deer strike incidents within about a 6 month period.

With my three motorcycles, all of them have seen a drop in their premiums; although only a small drop. Umbrella policy is still the same with no change. My boat insurance has only gone up a few dollars. My vacation home has been the same. And my primary home has seen a drop and then a rise over the three years with the recent increase taking up the premium $100 higher than three years ago.

So based on my situation, the major increases have been strictly with my autos.

What hasn't gone up astronomically last couple years? Bought some groceries last night, store has 12packs Coke for $9. WTF, food prices still seem to be rising. Gas prices also on rise again.

This thread prompted me to go back and compare my auto insurance for the last couple of years. I've been with USAA for 40+ years and the thing about that is that it is a mutual -- I get a credit (of several hundred) annually as my share of the excess income. My semi-annual premiums went up about a hundred starting last month (1500ish > 1600ish for three nice vehicles) which doesn't seem too bad to me. I certainly agree with posters in this thread that we seem to be in an insurance crisis with lots of uninsured/underinsured idiots on the roads.

I’ve been seeing these reports since the beginning of the year. I was very pleased the increase on my renewal with State Farm was pretty small. I hope it stays that way. If I need to switch I’m going to check with Erie. Glad I saw that post.

After almost 30 years with USAA their continual increases over the last 3 - 4 years made me leave. State Farm beat them fairly substantially and I had them before I was eligible for USAA, so I was pretty comfortable going back to them. I’m convinced at least part of the reason USAA is raising rates is to pay for all of this advertising they’ve started. It’s crazy and it’s stupid. If you’ve been in the military for any time at all you know about USAA.

It used to be no one could beat USAA. On the occasion I might check another company (before that was all on the internet) when they asked who I was with and I said USAA they would immediately stop and tell me they wouldn’t be able to beat them. No more.

My personal experience and how making a bad impression or a bad experience will still linger even decades later affects how I view Erie. I will NEVER do business with them ever no matter how much cheaper they are. My run in with them was in my early 20s where I attempted to get a policy solely under my name to get off of my parent's insurance which was GEICO at the time.

I talked to an Erie agent and she gave me a quote which was substantially lower than what I was paying being part of my parent's policy. She said the only stipulation was I needed to bring my car to her for a visual inspection. Ok. No problem. She looked over the car and saw some minor paint damage on the roof of the car which was a result of some idiot kids egging my car. She said I would have to have that paint damage fixed before she'll sign off on the car.

So off to the body shop and got that area fixed. Go back and she approved the condition of the car. I wrote a check for the initial payment and waited for the official policy in the mail. A few days go by and I get a call from her. She said Erie won't insure me because I didn't tell them that my car also had my mom's name on the title. Total BS as I did tell her upfront and it was a requirement for GEICO to cover the car under her policy. Then she rambles on about some other BS as to why Erie won't insure me. Pissed that I wasted my time and money to do the paint work that wasn't necessary, I just let things go. Or so I thought.

A couple of weeks later, I get a notice from my bank that I'm over drafted and they are surcharging me. WTF. Everything balanced out as to the withdrawals and deposits....until...I realized the aholes at Erie cashed my check even though they weren't going to insure me. I had to wait a few more works for those jerks to send me back a refund.

So Erie can go F' themselves.

Back when I got Consumer Reports, Amica always seemed to top their ratings of auto insurance companies. Anyone with Amica?

Amica gets approval ratings almost as good as USAA and a lot of times they have pretty good rates. But, lately when I’ve checked they were higher than USAA.

Sticking with USAA.

But guys. This is chump change, paying attention to the cost of food lately? Holy shit dude. $5-10 for a gallon of milk, my kids are breaking me.

Yea, my StateFarm agent tried to sell me this — "but eggs prices have gone back down" I told her.
