I think we can agree that the old mare is great for teaching those new to the sport.

However it is a lot more rewarding to working with a horse that, while it may be a tad headstrong or difficult to control, does actually do what the rider wants.

If you are the type that plays video games and always uses the cheats before even trying, then to most enthusiasts that are already accomplished track drivers , that's what an M2 is.

Don't worry about learning the physics of driving because you just want to go fast without knowing How or why.

Don't worry about learning how to master the friction point of a clutch because you have auto rev match.

Don't worry about shifting and gearing - and the delicate balance between when to shift and when not to - instead just get the DCT to do it for you instead.

With the 1M- it's all the driver.

Nothing is shifting for you.
Nothing is rev-matching for you.
You can actually FEEL the roadway due to mechanical steering.

It's You driving , rather than the car doing all the work and you just steering.

If ones goal is fast lap times. Take the M2.

If ones goal is the joy of driving, then the car that requires the most input and control and *attention * from the driver , is the 1M.

I'm sure that Chris Harris could express this better than I.
But you expressed better than I, so thank you Sir.

When you first get into a new car that has a lot of speed you think "wow this is incredible. I love this car!" After that wears off in a week then you need other factors to make the car exciting. Old school bmw always shine in that regard and the 1m qualifies without a doubt. A lot of fast cars that are numbed down are the ones that get boring after a few weeks.

Cars need feedback and need to give you a challenge

Any proper sports car driver should. The M2 is faster but it is simply less challenging to drive and it's also less visceral because the controls are so soft. Steering is not as good in the M2. The clutch is softer/lighter and the gearbox is also slicker and therefore less tactile feel even when shifting.

While the 1M and M2 are quite similar, one is a " sports car for dummies " ( in that everything is dumbed down and simpler - aka auto rev match or DCT ) and the other is a sports car for drivers ( not racers).

I was under the impression that he had an E90 M3 in signal green ... ? I wonder if he's let it go.
He had a loaner F80 in Signal Green that he returned.

He did own a white E92M some years ago, though.

This AW owner agrees. I saw a black 1M from a distance in Munich during our ED trip five years ago. That's the last time I saw one. If I could go back, I'd get BSM, but I do have to say that my 47,000-mile 1M still looks awesome, rock chips and all, thanks to AW on top of white primer. : )

Bummed we never got our schedules to line up when I lived in Dallas, M3 Adjuster.

Oh yes, the way Chris drives I am sure he's going to go through couple of OEM charge pipes if doesn't get an aftermarket one. It took me 4 broken charge pipes in one year to get the point.

@M3 Adjuster

"Easier to drive" means exactly "rewarding" and "predictable in a good way" - the car reacts the way the driver wants it to. That quality is what we've yearned for from every performance car.

Understandable that your nerve has been struck time and time again by hearing reviewers say how m2 is a slightly better car in "every way" than 1m. And how this CH buying 1m news cheers you up again - just don't discount another great car is all.

Have you read CH's review on m2 it would get you to figure out why now a 1m:
1) Rev matching issue with m2
2) Trying to be different

Calm down man, 1m is great, yet to find someone disagree with that.

Almost all the 1M reviews that I read or the comments from 1M owners claimed that when you drive it at its limits, it's almost like it's trying to kill you. I also read similar reviews about M4 as well due to its difficulty of putting the power down. Maybe M4 reviews didn't say it's trying to kill you but I sure remember the word "challenging to drive". On the other hand, for M2, like you said, most of the reviews mentioned how easy it's to drive. So here's my question as a person who doesn't have much track experience: Why would you want a car to be challenging to drive especially on a track where you are racing against time or other cars? Wouldn't a car that is easier to drive be more desirable? I have nothing against these two cars, just trying to learn more about them

By the way, he had an F80 in signal green but I don't know if he still has it.
Trust me it's not "challenging to drive" coming from a previous owner of a pre ABS - pre stability control Viper GTS. The GTS did have character and it was raw and that's why I loved it. But I found myself enjoying the 1M even more. If I constantly drove distances at 80-150mph I would rather be in the Viper but in my real world (40-80mph)I love the steering and the overall experience from the 1M.

M2 is a great car and because we all acknowledge it, we find it cool that CH sees some of the things we see that set it apart. It's like when Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie. We were all shocked! Aniston is much cuter and seemed more down to earth then you see Jolie going to Africa, piloting a plane and all sorts of crazy things that made her more exciting to him. Everyone likes Jennifer Aniston, she was America's sweetheart but some people like things a little edgier. Personally I have had a guy blurt out to my face for no reason after he found I own a 1M that M2 is better at cars and coffee. I told him yes! But for me, I love my no comfort mode cockpit with 100% real sound and big simple gauges and no iDrive or iPad on top of the dash. I see things in the 1M that many don't and nice to see that someone that can basically have any car and drives so many sees the special character of the 1M, not just in a written opinion but with his own money.

This is great news and publicity as well for the 1M . and not from any journalist but Chris Harris !!

No doubt a guy who loves driving perfection in cars , I guy who has owned the Holy Grail of 911's (997 RS 4.0 - probably regrets very much about selling it!) .

1M FTW !

dont know how he could say he prefers it better then the m2. makes no sense. M2 is better in every way, looks better, thousend times more comfortable, more power. more space in the interior like i mean a ALOT more, in the 1m you feel your cramped inside. he should have gotten an M3 CSL if he wants something special
