I got a loaner today....

So I dropped off my 128 to service today to get the software update for the radio problem. And they give me a 335i 6MT...

It is a very nice car, damn fast....I can not imagine what 135i would be. If I didn't have only 3k miles, I would be talking to my CA for 135i operation

The 335i is standard at my dealer unless they are out, then they upgrade from there. I am surprised they gave you a manual transmission for a loaner.

Glad you enjoyed it though. Just like the others I believe they may have been baiting you.

Actually no! They gave me 328 auto, and I saw 1 outside parked and said that I do not like driving auto cars, can I get that 335, and they were nice enough to give me that. I am quite amazed actually. Or may be my mind is playing tricks on me!!

I have negotiated a loan car to be picked up on the 2nd September as my 135 is taking much longer than was originally quoted. I am fully expecting my dealer to have a 318d or a 116d sat waiting for me. Given that I am going to be driving it for about 3 weeks it would be a pleasant suprise for me to be given something like a 335i. I just can't see it happening here in the UK.

Last loaner I got was an '09 X5 3.0 xDrive with only 700 miles on it, loaded to the gills. It was nice, but I didn't love it. It feels very underpowered and the transmission was constantly shifting to try and keep up. Great interior except for the old style i-Drive. I'm surprised that we get the upgraded version in the 1er but a $60K X5 gets the old system.

I'd take my wife's MDX (and the $20k difference) anyday over it.

I guess he has the same problem I do. The radio just stops working, no sound, you cant select a different source. It's a software bug, the fix is supposedly available. I stopped by at my dealer to have it fixed, they told me it would take the whole day! I'll just wait and combine that with service (coming up).

my dealer said something similar about the time needed. "Sometime 2hours to 2 weeks might be needed" I have no clue why it might take 2 weeks time.. lol

I got a 535xi loaner when my 135i was in for warranty work... the comfort vs performance trade-off was actually not a bad one. Throw a JB3 in that 535 and it'll be a rocket too probably!

So far I have had a 335i twice and a 535i once. I still prefer the 1er.

I also tried to get an upgrade loaner before they pulled some strings and gave me the 535i. When they were trying to figure it out I said "Why not just let me drive the ///M3? I will be nice to it."

I got an 09 X5 xdrive 3.0d for a loaner last week when I put my car in for service. My thoughts are the same as yours. Although mine is a diesel, it still boasted 160kw and a healthy 580nm of torque but I was left feeling a bit disappointed. All in all I am glad I had the opportunity to drive it as I was considering getting an X5 as a replacement for my current SUV. I thought overall the car was very standard and I wasn't impressed with the old idrive system either!!!! Dealership forgot to leave the Navigation disc in the car as well. I think maybe my opinion of the car would change if I had the opportunity to drive the V8 version with sports rims and sunroof etc, but based on the car I drove I would never consider buying it. I came to the same conclusion as you to keep my current SUV and save the coin unless something better comes along. Not so wow'd with what else available in its competing price range either.

I know everyone here who has a 135 always comments on how awesome the power of the N54 is... but honestly since you have a MT, I think it's quite the opposite. Though I have the step (and sometimes kick myself for it, yet sometimes pat myself on the back), I imagine the 135 MT to be more boring than the 128 MT. I'm always in manual mode on the step.. i NEVER drive in D or even in DS without using the shifter or paddles.. but no matter what it's always up to 60 in second gear.. must be booooring when you could shift close to redline once or twice to get to highway speed instead. Makes me not regret (as much) waiting 4 months and not getting the discount of the off-the-lot step model just to get an MT 135.. MT 135 must be near-useless compared to MT 128, and that's no lie. The 128 is the perfect beast for shifting.. the 135 (and every _35 like your loaner 3) is the perfect beast for drag racing IMO.

how could you honestly say that the 135 MT is more boring than the 128 MT?!?! Have you driven a 135 MT? You can still shift the 135 at redline in a manual, the automatic and the manual have a peak of power at around 7000 RPM because that is the nature of the N54 engine and the turbos. auto or manual has nothing to do with rev-ability. sure the 128 is NA, therefore it likes to be revved, but it just doesnt have the pick up of the 135 or the torque. i am not saying the 128 is a slouch and is useless, i am saying that it is the nature of the engine, and it sounds like to me that you should have gotten the 128 or stepped up to m3 if you like to redline it, because manual or not, it is still a TT engine, therefore peak power is not at redline

1speedbike, I think I'm just as confused as everyone else who's going read your comments will be.

So because a car has 300HP it's boring? So then an M3 or R8 must be even more boring because they have even more horse power!?!

I'm not following your logic here, if there is any.

Are you saying because you don't have to shift as much its boring? That still makes no sense. I assume you have a bike and I'm pretty sure they get up to 160mph in 3rd gear, does that mean a bike is boring? As for your drag racing comment, in fact no BMW is made for drag racing, they are made for daily driving or the road track. An F1 car is really fast in a stright line is it made for drag racing?
