Pyrat Clone

Hello all, been on here a while and finally decided to getting around to make a build thread. Picked the car up almost 4-5 years ago now. Served great as a DD and put 80k on the clock. Unfortunately after 80k + age all of my extended warranties and maintenance were coming to an end. So I decided to start looking at trading it in for something bigger and better. Ultimately I decided to keep the lil guy and bought a reasonable new DD (Ford Focus Hatchback) and have fun making the lil 1er into a fun project.

The reasoning behind the name Pyrat Clone is due to this being a labor of love project, working on this in my free time (which I don't have a lot of) and to enjoy creating something. This isn't meant to be a very impressive build or to wow the masses.

Anyway I will update this when I have time, I really only get to work on the car on the weekends and its been hard to work on it lately due to the cold weather.

Enjoy!

Finished up a milestone today. Finished wrapping up the 1M Front-end. Next up is the BMW PPK2 Install, Im contemplating only going through the trouble of mounting up the additional radiator; saving the new radiator hoses and radiator fan install when I upgrade to the CSF radiator.

Also installed the F8X DCT Paddles, I feel they look more appropriate than the stock DCT paddles the E8X was equipped with. I will have to take better pictures when I get the car out in natural sun light; the lights in the garage were not making the camera very happy.

I'm really interested as to how the paddles fit! What mods did you have to do to make them work? They look really nice!

That bumper looks great man, the paddles, wheel, and gauges really pop as well. How hard was it to wrap the front bumper? Do you have any experience with that other than the other panels you've done on your car thus far? I'm going to wrap my whole front end in clear PPF when I get the car back from the shop. It's all fresh paint as it stands now and I'd really like it to stay that way lol.

Only previous experience was a summer job as a kid peeling vinyl off old box trucks and trailers. This is the first time I've ever tried applying it.

It's more time consuming than it looks. Professionals really do make it look easy. I just take my time, especially with it being cold. I watched a lot of videos on common tricks, applications, tips, etc and that really helped out. I really liked CK Wraps videos as he explains a lot of the problems with vinyl and how to fix them. Also Arlon has a whole YouTube with diy videos.

The 1M bumper was really hard. Lots of inlays, so your not over stretching the material. Now that the bumper is out of the way the rest should be a breeze like the 1M fenders were.

Clear bra may be more difficult than vinyl since it's thicker.

You really should wait roughly 90 days before applying vinyl to fresh paint.

Good to know! One of my best friends does vinyl for a living now so I might see if he'll just do it for me lol

Yeah yeah I hear you! I'll get back on the scheduling when I have my car back. I think I'd die of anxiety if I scheduled a cruise before I knew I could bring my car lol.

Semi-sad news. My supplier can't find any more Arlon Thundercloud Metallic since Arlon stopped producing their re-styling film a while ago. Shame since I really loved the color. However its my fault for doing the bumper and fenders first before I was ready to purchase vinyl for the entire car.

So I'm back to the drawing board on paint/vinyl. Going to order some samples tonight and see where that leads me. Hoping to find something similar to Arlon's Thundercloud. Otherwise I may just get the pieces painted and leave it BSM for a while.

Sorry to hear that Yeineken. Hopefully you'll find something else that you'll like just as much. Good luck to you.

Yea paint is very expensive. The quote for the front bumper + fenders was $1k and thats from local smaller affordable shops in MD/DE.

Hope everything comes out perfect for you at that price.
