water spill in trunk, electronic issue

Alright, i posted my first thread on wheels/tire section because my car had a TPMS inactive warning light. Well couple days later and my car royally freaks out. Gauges go nuts, all dash lights on (red car on lift the whole thang), but car seemed to drive fine. Drove it home and took the other car to run my errands. Well, started it up today, the day after, and nothing is wrong. Car fires right up, no warning lights at all, nada. I went for a quick drive to my nearby friend and drove back, no issues. Popped trunk to see if anything wrong visually with the battery, nope looked fine. Then I noticed it. The gallon of emergency distilled water had been punctured in the right hand nook of the trunk compartment, behind the wheel arch. I let my brother use the car and he must have accidentally thrown something in the trunk and punctured it. No signs of liquid, not moist and no smells. Let the trunk get some fresh air for a little bit and i started it up and put it in the garage again. Bringin car to my indy tomorrow, i have a video of the ordeal and will show him. I really hope it was a one time thing. Thought it was battery, but the battery is so far away from the spill?? Will keep you guys posted.

I'd pull apart the fender lining in the trunk along with pulling out the trunk floor carpeting and see if there is water any where else. I don't know if there are any electronics under that right cubby area but I do know there are electronics on the left which on my car is the amplifier for the stereo system.

This happened to a buddy of mines, his cooler leaked after a day at the lake and shorted something back there. The car started acting weird throwing up all kinds of lights and stuff. It shorted something back there, cost like $600 to fix.

Damn, I really hope it isn't that bad but sounds like it might be.

Yes. It can be that bad. I had a water issue in my trunk too. Never did find the source of the water but I suspect it was due to something the dealer body shop did. In the end, the dealer covered the repair which turned out to be a shorted out junction box. The symptoms I got was my gauge cluster lighting up like a Christmas tree, a bunch of warnings about a severe malfunction, and the iDrive nav screen going dead along with the gauge cluster. The car was driveable during this time though.

Hope it's not soaked electronics. This is why I am very careful when I put anything with liquid in my trunk.

You could also buy some DampRid. It's a moisture reducing product, popular here in FL. I'd pull all the trunk lining out to dry out and put a can of DampRid in the trunk while it's out to dry it out for a few days.

This happened to me two weeks ago. Pull the passenger side carpet out, let it dry out. You'll see two modules down in the trunk footwell. One for the PDC and the other I believe is the ABS module. Take both out, dry them along with the connectors. Hopefully you didn't fry them. If you need to, take the board out of the grey box holder and use contact cleaner and soak the board and grab a brush to brush off any rust that might formed a connection between some of the pins (it's what I did). Saved me from buying a PDC module at $500 CAD. Overall, make sure its dry, take the foam holder out and dry it along with the footwell. Hopefully the contact cleaner can save your module. I made a post about it.

I don't have PDC but I think my ABS module is screwed. How long did you wait to do this after you spilled stuff?? Thanks so much!

You've helped me immensely Steve! Unfortunately, one of the pins in the module is too corroded and fell off. I only have one module in this cubby area (probably as my car is not equipped with PDC, there is another blank hole I'm guessing for navigation or something). I cleaned off some yellowish mildew that grew on the floor of the trunk and I took out all the carpet so it dries. I am trying to source a used one as I am not interested in blowing $300 on a piece of plastic with some metalloid in it. Thanks again so much!!

Opened the harness up and was able to pull out the corroded pin from the green wire's clamp. Stupid RDC module. Anyways, now have to source one and find a decent coder in my area or pay the dealer.

Sorry to hear about the corroded pin breaking . I was lucky and it was only windshield fluid when mine went for a shit (lots of alcohol so no corrosion). That sucks. Just as a FYI, I'm not 100% positive but I think I remember reading somewhere that you need to code the module to the car in order for it to work. Do some research before you jump on buying a new module (or used) and need to get it coded anyways.

if its used and out of a working car, it does not need to be coded as long as its for the same type of car (numbers match). I would get a used one as they are already coded...I am pretty sure the coding is not super specific just to the car model.

I am sure it should have to be reset according to the e90 forums, but as of now it is only a TPMS error, so not a real problem because I check my pressures regularly. Will find one when I get the chance
