M1 Likely High Volume Car
..based on price.
We know if has to be priced
That puts it squarely at the 335i Coupe price point. How many prospective 335i drivers would rather opt for a true M car of a similar format to the 335i, for the same out of pocket? I'm guessing a lot. Add that ///M cache', and I'd think that it may exceed the sales of the existing e92 Coupe, seeing they'd be bringing in new people into the BMW fold, now that the M is $10k+ more attainable. I think that having an M variant to the 1 series will also boost sales of the 1 series iteslf. Shrewd move by BMW, but how badly will it cannibalize 335i coupe sales? Thoughts/Comments? |

I still dont think they would sell as much as the M3. There is just such heritage behind that name. It still is BMW's crown jewel. I mean the 3er still massively outsell the 1 series. I mean its about 12% of 3 sales on average. There are plenty of people that still can't get past the looks of the 1 series. It could still apply with the M1. The M3 would still be more elegant and luxurious.

If I have to predict - the M1 will be the "new" M3. It will retell the history of M3, only now it's got a new name. The setup is would be closer than the old M3s and so is the price point.

Right on, Sparoz. It's a step to the older 6-pot M3 cars. A revival of the old 3.2L V6, i'm assuming TT.

I see BMW attempting to create a new market, not kill the M3's market so that the M1 can exist. |

As far as pricing for this M1, I see the base between 45-48K, and with options, coming in between 52-55K. The direct competitors to the M1 will be the TTRs/RS-3, Cayman/Boxter, and any other premium performance coupes/entry level sports cars. I hope I am wrong about the price, but I can't see BMW setting the base price too near the cost of a loaded 135i.

If it comes in around $55k it will be really hard for me not to buy one when it's time to move to something different. I was really considering a used X5 M when the time came, but an M1 will be way too tempting. I think BMW will make it work. I don't know that it will be a high volume car, but it might take some sales from the 3 series.

I duno. i think there are a lot of 335 drivers (coupe and sedan) that need their cars to be daily drivers and not race cars. I friend of mine bought the 335 over the 135 becaues the 335 had a softer friendlier suspension.

I'm too lazy to check, but what's the base price of a 335i vs. the M3? I think that's what the price delta will be between a 1 and a M1. BMW always has a good idea of the premium you pay for a M car in general.

We all know that a fully optioned 335i is quite a bit more than an entry level M3. My point is that a average 335i is likely to cost the same as a base M1. |

Wow, a $50k 135i...that's nuts. I paid $16k less than that for my 135i, it has sports pack, leather, heated seats, ipod.
I think a base price over $50k is too much for an M1. There shouldn't be a $15k premium, $10k at most. |

Holy crap...my vert cost less than your coupe, and I have a lot of options.
I think that the M1 should cost about 46-47K Thats the same difference between a 135i coupe and a 135i vert. Remember the base price on a vert is 41K. Expect the base on an M1 coupe to be a couple K above that. |
