Translation: BMW cannot build a car that would perform as well as the R8 for anywhere near the same price.

He basically means that the M1's production has been scheduled for the last 1-2 years of the production of the E82. It can also be considered as a 'grande finale' for being the first and last 'M1' having an FI inline 6. M-variants of the next gen 1 series would get an FI inline 4. Best regards, south

Dollar for dollar, you could likely build a 135i to match the power of the proposed M1 for a lot less, but I would rather pay the premium to have the comprehensive package that is likely to come with the new car:
flared fenders CF roof sport seats warranty holistic engineering and tuning from the factory This is a terrific move by BMW and I think they will sell many units, perhaps even to me. |

As this would be the only M cabrio with a soft-top roof (The M6 Cabrio will have finished production by then.) Which allows for a weight advantage with the soft-top roof. The next 1er cabrio will retain a folding soft-top instead of a move to a folding hardtop. The next generation 1er will bring forth the Tii line with a Coupe , Cabrio and to appeal to more markets in Europe where the hot hatchback is more popular a 3dr Sporthatch. These models will be the teasers and the warm performance application before the next generation M1 arrives. PS output will be about 240 and will also be available in diesel specification using a specific boosted diesel unique to these cars. |

I'm with Scott on this one, I haven't driven any of the new TTs but I have driven the S5 and while it is a very quick car with a great V8 rumble, it was one of the most numb and boring cars I've driven so I understand the point he's trying to make. Same story with the Evo X, I can't even comprehend how people compare the X with the STI, the STI is such a more involving car to drive, even sitting in traffic and working its tight gearbox was rewarding whereas the Evo felt like sitting in a very fast living room. That was a bit of a ramble but to get back on track I have no doubt that in terms of track numbers the TT-S and RS and very capable but in terms of steering feel and things like that they aren't even on the same planet as a 135i, much less an M car. |

If anything, this new ///M1 can pay respect to the original by being a badass little monster....as we have all seen, there is no current plan for a BMW supercar....as a result, why come up with a name for this car that doesn't make sense or jive at all with the current naming procedures? ///M1 makes sense, and this car will wear the name well IMO.....

Wait for the concept at Geneva. The M3 came almost a year after we saw the concept if I remember correctly. When you have M bosses talking about it undercutting the M3, it will come here. Has an //M car ever not make it to the U.S.?

A $170k M3 variant rather than a standalone M car. I don't think that is relevant.

Another variant would be the E46 M3 CSL, but not a standalone M car like you said.

What ever, it is good that the ///M range extends. Maybe the M1 E82 will be faster than the M3 E92, and many will buy the M1 instead of the M3, but many will prefere the less "quick" M3 for its High-Reving NA V8. Then when the next M3 F32 comes out with its 450 hp L6 TT engine it will be faster than the M1 E82 and than the next M1 F22 wich with its 350 hp L4 TT.
BUT I am sure the M3 is not the last high-reving NA M Car. It will be the Z4 M. The Z4 sDrive35is is as fast as the last Z4 M, but it is not an M Car. Yet who knows, maybe the Z4 GT3 is not the Z4 Roadster but the not yet unveiled nor available Z4 Coupé. |

Excuse me, i should have clarified. "Modern" M car. The EVO versions might not have made it here but there was still an E30 M3 and E36 M3 here. There are plenty M1's here now. BMW was no where then in 78 as they are 30yrs later.
