Hey guys,
What are your thoughts on the new BMW M2 Competition? Would you add it to your garage along side the 1M? Shmee's Video with all the details: https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...hotos-release/ |

I think it is very compelling if you are the majority of BMW fans that see the bloat and weight gain OK as long as the horsepower is there to match. It is honestly a really cool car with awesome performance and very compelling. However, it is simply a continuation of all current BMWs, with the exclusion of the 1M. They call it competition but it still doesn't get a temp gauge. It is heavier and yes faster. So yes it's cool for sure and congrats to new buyers. It will remain a special car because it still has a manual offering and will still be desired in the future for that reason. Since this is a 1M forum, I am approaching it as the exact type of guy that Kay Segler targeted. Something simple, pure and focused. It is a really fast arcade on wheels. Great looking for sure but there area lot of arcades on wheels out there. As I said, the only thing that stands out is the manual trans offering. Automatic ones will be just be another model in a long line of ever increasing weight and sophistication. With every new model that comes out, the simplicity of the 1M is growing in my heart as something you can't get anymore. I cherish that I still have one.
It does bother me though that BMW uses these "Competition" label and no one calls them out on it....people are just chugging the Kool aid in industrial quantities. They should just call this something like M2 GT M2is but competion seems dishonest with the weight gain, auto driving stuff that I wonder if it will even be allowed on the track? |

BMW 1M
Weight - 3,296lbs HP - 335 TQ - 332 BMW M2 Comp Weight - 3,387lbs HP - 405 TQ - 406 It's not heavier by much, but is sure has a lot more power and torque. 1M will always remain special. I just wonder how close this new model comes to the drive and feel of the 1M. |

Newer cars will also be burdened with tighter emissions control and heavier technology toys. On paper the numbers may sound fantastic but the test will be the actual drive.
Something that 1M will always hold supreme is the hydraulic steering. |

I think the current and expanding line of M cars is excellent, and BMW has been very tactful in making them highly appealing, while still preserving the allure of special models like the 1M.
The M2 Competition addresses a lot of complaints that surfaced with the regular M2 with a few of its changes such as a real-deal M engine with an S prefix, M mirrors, M seats and more. As with the M3 CS and M4 CS, I expect the M2 Competition to be limited production with around 1,000 units made available for the US, maybe fewer. Pricing should be somewhere around the $65k threshold or perhaps (hopefully) a bit less. Quote:

The M2 Competition will be completely replacing the regular M2, so I don't expect it to be a limited production run...

This is true, but there are only a few more model years left for the platform as a whole, and a CSL version is also in the pipeline. Merely speculating

Supposedly it does have an oil temp gauge, it's just not a dedicated gauge like the 1M has. Instead, it is selectable through the LCD screen portion of the cluster. Reading through the M2 Competition introduction post, someone posted a picture of their M240i cluster which already has this.

Would have been nice if they added a carbon roof to offset the extra weight from the s55 engine.
Definitely looks good, will have to check one out at the local dealer when they get them.

So I guess the point is that this is a really cool car, fast a little heavier etc. As a car guy I can't help like it but so is the M3 and M4 and M5 and Alfa Quadrifoglio, etc. The new car is just a continuation of the BMW evolution of a little heaver, faster, you don't need a real easy to see gauge. It has cool seats, etc. But for all of this stuff, I think I like the M3 more now. At least it has 4 doors and the idrive and gadgets don't seem as out of place. So I am being very careful to say, yes cool car, but just more of the same. The 1M was a departure, this is not. |

TL;DR I like it.
BMW has been driving me away for many years as a customer since the 1M. I've always lusted for an M2 body with the 1M soul. I was never fortunate enough to be able to purchase a brand new BMW and finally do my dream ED with my wife. This might be my last chance with this brand and hence my liking for the M2 Competition and most likely the CS/CSL/GTS that will be coming. I've driven both manual and DCT M2 and both didn't deserve my hard earned money because I was spoiled by older BMWs and the 1M. Price wise, I don't think it will be far off from the current M2 at the base level. Putting an S55 in is merely for emission and catching up with the competition. The cost increase for BMW is minimal and they'll get their money back either on options or volume cars like the M3/M4. It definitely won't be limited but it will be a bargain in terms of BMW money. What I honestly do feel is that BMW is finally listening to the lowly enthusiasts' wants and needs from an M car. We wanted M mirrors, a true M engine, M seats, oil temp, and a manual on the purest and smallest M car that they can make in this day's age while also not charging a ridiculous amount of money. The M2 competition is the stepping stone to the next best modern M car. The current M2 is a good car for what it is but it's far from what a 1M was and what it represented. The 1M is far from perfect but its as close to what the true meaning of ///M is to me in the last decade. As I've become a tad more fortunate over the years, I've struggled really hard with the brand that I grew up loving so much. I live and breathe M. Having 4 M cars right now and most likely adding a couple more in the near future (E36 M3, E39 M5, E30 M3, Z4M Coupe, E60 M5 stick), I can't fall in love with anything that BMW sells anymore. Trust me I've tried very hard. I might be too nostalgic or old school at this point but the only thing that will stir my pot is the most hardcore M2 variant that they can make. Not even the M4gts could do that. All I know is that if we don't support the M2, M2 Competition, M2 CSL, then BMW was right all along to forget us and build high volume/high margin cars that satisfy the masses and produces the highest profit. The M2 competition will not be great but its at least the best true M car that we can get at this point. |

Well put Nkc. That said, wouldn't you consider the M3 comp pack a reasonable surrogate for a contemporary E39 M5?

First production BMW I've seen with the stupid new kidney-not-a-kidney grille.

I was personally never a fan of the regular M2 at all. Id take a 1M over an M2 any day of the week, but this new M2 Competition seems amazing to me.
The S55 engine in the m2 for a BMW guy who likes doing mods is absolutely amazing. Coming from the N54, I think we all have an appreciation for the shear amounts of power you can make from bolt ons or turbo upgrades, and the N55 always disappointed in that category. The S55 is a downright beast with bolt ons, a tune, E85, and/or even turbo upgrades. I could only imagine how killer a M2 competition with 600hp would be. I personally love the M2 CS and potential it has

I haven't posted in a while but I read occasionally since selling both of my 1M's. I drove 1Ms on the track and loved the car, truly an amazing all around car. Personally I thought the M2 would have delivered more of a hit to the resale of the 1Ms which remained high at the time. However after driving the M2 on the track I was just simply not a fan of the car. To me it was not a better car than the 1M.
The M2 Comp on the other hand appears to be everything the M2 should have been from the start. The details of the M2 comp with a better motor (never an N55 fan), seats, and lots of suspension/braking upgrades. I already am on a deposit list for the car. 1M will always be special for a variety of reasons, but this M2 comp appears it will be a better all around car and I wouldn't be shocked if people traded 1Ms for them and impacted the resale of both 1Ms and M2s. Only time will tell but that's just my opinion. |

Hard to believe, but the 1M is nearly 7 years only already. Depreciation hasn't been an issue thus far...do you really think the car's market value will be adversely affected by whatever BMW's latest-and-greatest may be? Personally, I doubt it.
