Felt like my 135 wasnt a BMW after oil change.

Was time for my 135s first oil change, and after doing it I feel like its not a BMW. I have or currently owned 11 diff BMW models.

I have always used a 30 something mm wrench to get the oil filter cap off as they had the nut on top of the cap, WTF there isnt one on the 135! I have maybe 6 diff sizes oil cap wrenchs just because and of course I didnt have the size. In my extensive tool collection nothing could help get cap off because last BMW tech prolly put it on too tight. Luckily it was Wednesday evening before turkey day and I didnt need the car again until Saturday.... cause I had already drained the oil!

Second surprise was the oil drain plug on the pan was on the side, I swear every BMW I owned it was on the bottom of the pan.

Dont know if these 2 things are common on all BMWs now but was never like that on any I owned from 1986-2012 models.

Oh and that cover that flips down on shielding for the oil drain plug is a crappy design with its locking mechanism.

Thought this was going to be a complaint that response was sluggish after accidentally pouring 75W140 gear lube in the crankcase. Guess its more of a time-marches-on piece.

Peace... Mack

Yeah I know, was frustrating because I couldnt complete the job, good thing I didnt do the oil change when I had to go to work the next morning else would of been new oil with old filter.

I dont understand why they would change the design of the cap and not have the 3Xmm nut on top, unless that incorrectly stresses the housing and causes all the gasket leaks...

Oh my first dipstickless BMW was 6 yrs ago so I am long over that.

My thought was that he put extra virgin olive oil in, and then realized it wasn't Tuscan :-)

I guess the oil drain plug is different for your cars, mine’s on the very bottom of the pan, it’s handy to stick my magnetic drain plug to while the oil is draining. I like the little oil service window in the undertray, then you don’t have to pull out the undertray (like you do on modern Fords, which have like 5 different size and type screws holding it in) with it’s 17-odd screws. The longest stage of my oil changes is waiting for the oil to drain. Takes me 15 minutes max to change my oil, and that’s running around the garage gathering up stuff as I need it... I love changing oil on my car, it’s so easy!

If cars still had dipsticks I would of gotten an oil extractor a few years ago, only have 1 car with a dipstick so its not worth it. I'm always surprised how most people are amazed I change the oil myself, such a basic task, they should see the other things I do. Common question is what do you do with old oil..... uh you could put back in new bottles and bring it anywhere, autoparts store, town garage, even Walmart I think... I take giant jugs to the recycling center every few years, just dropped off about 60 L last month.

So what filter cap wrench do you guys use? I bought the Assenmacher V 410 and it works fine, but kinda expensive at $18.

My neighbor has an X3, and we were talking about oil changes. My wife was there, and she was incredulous that my oil change costs 80 bucks. My neighbor chimed in that he has his done, and it's around $200. Aren't you glad you married a mechanic, Honey?

I just use a $5 strap wrench. Works great on cars, motorcycles, lawn tractors...

Peace... Mack

The cap/wrench for the 128i is the same as the one on my S80 V8. I bought one off ebay for about $7. The crappy door on the bottom is a lot better than a dozen screws on the bottom of the S80. I may cut out a piece of the shield after I figure out how I will hinge it back on.

I have the Stahlbus drain valve on the BMW and Volvo. It takes forever to drain but that's a small price for being clean.

I couldnt get mine off with the many strap wrenches I have, or giant channellocks or huge adj wrench. The angle and spacing was part of the issue, other being it was put on way too tight on its last dealer oil change.

Tech must have used an impact wrench to put it on.

See, you are approaching the problem wrong.

I also have a collection of oil filter cap tools, from the old times when I used to do oil changes myself.

Since a gas station near me does it for $15 WHILE I WATCH THE TECH DOING IT (I provide oil and filter), I won't bother to do that anymore. Let the mechanic deal with removing the old oil filter. He probably has done it a thousand times and knows all the tricks.

Ha, maybe in 30yrs but by then will I even have a car with oil lol, probably.

I am fanatical about my cars, no one touches them unless desperate, absolutely necessary, or warranty work.
