So if your worried, secure the plate of your choice for your 1er and just never put it on your current car... If, that is, its legal in your state. I'm in TN now, but not sure what the law is. I named my car ///Molly the day I got it, but didnt want people to think I was driving my GF's car if I got the personalized plate MOLLY, besides, I'm sure its taken... I did personizled plates on my Honda's/Acura's, but I dont think they are so hot on BMW's. I'll probably have my euro plate from ED on the front (or one just like it if they make me return it) and a normal TN tag on the back. Or I might to a random personalized plate (3letters/3numbers) just so I can get grey and not the green graphic TN tag. I dont think tags should detract attention from the car. Meaning the people will be staring at the plate trying to figure out what it says (if its tricky) instead of looking at the car itself...

I assume that in OK, that you still actually have the original license plate number as the "true" number and the personalized plate is mapped to that record number in the computer. I am pretty sure that in NC it is this way as I have seen my old plate number on my registration somewhere. I have no idea if it is kosher to keep your old plate on the car though.

What dont you get? lol They've issued you a normal tag for the car you currently have and its tied to the car's VIN and your info... You apply and recieve a Personalized plate, its also tied to your current car's VIN and your info... Therefore if a cop ran either plate (whichever you have on the car) it would bring up the correct car and the correct owner information... So, it would be considered legal to have either one tag or the other on the car... That being said, if you wanted to secure a plate for a car your 100% sure your going to buy you could technically order it for the car you currently own/drive and never install it on your current car when it arrives in the mail... Your current car would still retain the current tag/tag number and it would be tied to your car's VIN and your info... Then, when your new car arrives and you've taken delivery. You'll pay to switch the plate from the old car (that it was never on) to the new one... Does that make better sense? Like I said, check with your state. I would imagine they are all different. If your state makes you turn in your current plate when your personalized one comes in, then not putting the personalized plate on your current car wouldnt be an option...

^^ misunderstanding.. from what I know in CA you can ONLY have ONE plate assigned to your car. If I were to get a personalized plate I would have to return my initially issued plate so it so the vehicle would be identified with the new personalized plate. From my knowledge(might be wrong), we can't have two plates for one vehicle. but your statement said "In Oklahoma it would be legal to have either the normal plate or the personalized plate on the car" Should that have been and AND where the or is...

^ no problem...
My original post makes perfect sense to me but then again, I am from Oklahoma. But I believe I used the "either, or" correctly. "either, and" would have been improper, or I was taught wrong. To have used "and" where my "or" is I would have had to remove the "either." Or thats how I was learned... I guess you have to think out of the CA box (joking), in OK the tag is yours forever if you renue it or let it expire. But thats why I said check with your state, I know in Kansas they take tags back when your done with them... Have a good Turkey Day...
