1M front lip

Folks... I have a question. I recently bought a Slek front lip. Installed it... and really liked it. fitment was excellent and i thought it added that "specialness" to the car. however, on day 1.... I was driving on the highway and the moment I hit 80MPH, it happened. the front of the lip unstuck and the air bent it down to the ground. next thing i know i look in my rear view and see half the lip getting run over by the car behind me... ugh... to say the least. basically i found that the tape just failed. the strange thing was that once it was installed, it seemed so stuck on that it was nearly impossible to unstick. i tried pushed down on it and couldnt get it to let go. however, the pressure at 80mph (and maybe because it was a hot day), was enough to make it unstick. As a follow up, Slek and HP Auto has been working with me to try and replace my lip... but not sure that is what makes sense. Thoughts on this?

Here is my question for all of you with lips. Should i buy another Slek and try again? or is there another easier and cheaper solution you all like?

did you clean with alcohol the bottom of your bumper before installing it?

It was cleaned... but thats not really the point of my post. What i am trying to do is just see what other options are out there. I am hoping folks with specific experience can chime in. i see under type lips as well as protruding lips. i am open to both....

Was it bolted and taped? I'd recommend some stronger tape such as buytl double sided, used loads on mine, and its been way over 100mph on track etc and solid.

Sorry to hear that

Did it do any damage to your car when it came off?

I had the same issue exactly.

Go for BOCA . great fitment and quality and looks similar to Slek's one.

Any thought about what it is about the Slek design that caused it to happen?

I think its because there is no front support other than tape. the back is bolted and solid. but since the Slek lip is longer when measuring how far out it protrudes, it will naturally get more air to push on it. i think the fix is either have front achor points or more tape in the front than just a strip.

Ok that makes more sense. You had mentioned that it was both bolted and taped but I didn't realize that the bolts sat further back. I guess this why the big splitters have the support rods -- physics is physics, in the end.

exactly... but i get why Slek built it the way they did... its because they dont want you to have to modify the front OE bumper... which actually is a reason to buy it. however, I think it would have worked better if it wasnt as long in the front and they added more tape. However, the mold is already built... ah well. Now i just need to decide if i buy it again or go another route or do nothing.

OP, I also have the BOCA carbon lip and it has pretty much the exact same style as the Slek. If you do get the BOCA lip just make sure it's on as best as you can or else it's going to happen again. It's an expensive thing to have to replace.

The fit and finish of the BOCA lip is perfect...I've had mine on for a couple of years now..bolted and taped..I also took the liberty of putting a 1" strip of velco along the front bottom part of the bumper as I live in a condo and there are some stupid bumps here.

Bad luck.

I ended up going with Lightweights lip. It's extremely thick and is double bolted in 4 areas under the bumper. I recently hit a shredded semi tire at highway speeds and it look it like a champ with no damage to the lip.

Yeah... i hear ya. I totally get why cars dont have lips typically from the factory. imagine the complaints from owners hitting things on the freeway or having issues in the parkinglot. but they look so damn good!

That's bad luck, and to be honest I am not surprised it happened. I have the slek lip on my 135i. When I first got it and bolted it on (without tape), there were 1/2" to 1" gaps from the bottom of the bumper to the lip because of the lack of front supports. I ended up using 3M double sided trim tape along the entire length of the top of the lip where it contacts the bumper. I then used a few books placed along the bottom of the lip with towels stacked on them to press the lip upward and let it sit overnight. I haven't had any problems and have also had the car over 100 mph on track.

I imagine that any lip will likely have the same issues just because there aren't any bolts to be used on the bottom of the bumper. If you really like the Slek lip I'd give it another shot because I know it can be done.

i think you are right. all lips have to deal with physics. I just ended up rebuying the same lip. when i receive it this time, i will make sure to use alcohol to really clean the surface of the bumper... i will also add more tape because why not? Ill update you all with either the stupidest decision i have made so far... or a win story.
fingers crossed.

it happened to me 4-5 times, especially when the car goes 260-70km/h.. i replaced mine a couple of times and after the last time i decided not to put any lip anymore. This is due to the fact that probably none of the aftermarket front lips gone through any sort of wind testing and high speed testing. (probably cost factor) Also (maybe) due to the design of the front of the 1M, it is not suitable to have an additional front lip. Probably that's why BMW M didn't make any front lip for the 1M.

So.. stock is best.

You are probably right... there is a reason why BMW didnt create a lip on these cars. However, I just love to look. and since i am not tracking this car, i am less worried about the design. I am more focused on making it feel more special. Its my once in a while driver. And someday, i want to give this to my son. But for now, i just want to make it stand out a little bit.

I am hoping... hoping! that I dont have the same issue again. I just ordered more double sided tape and the recommended alcohol to really clean the bumper. I am even going to install it and have something to firmly press the lip to the bump, which i will leave on for 3 days (the recommended amount of time for the 3M tape to reach full adhesion). If the lip fails again after all that... then i am a giant idiot for buying it twice.
guess well see.
