This is an interesting comparison, though I'm sure most people will be happy that the new car won't be equipped with the SMG like the CSL was.

Thanks for all the info Scott.

Where in LA is the test team? Any information you can share about that? I sure would love to bump into them here.

I'm concerned about all the talk of limited production runs on this car. I'll be pretty bummed if I can't manage to get my hands on one when my current least is up.

Without the audible clues. Which is 90% of it.

I have owned an S14 with a CF airbox, high lift cams, and open exhaust and the new ///M One will not have this soundtrack. The airbox is louder than the exhaust. Put a whoosh on the CSL and I'll bet it feels worlds apart in the driving experience.

///Joy is sensory overload. It must have an ///M soundtrack. Not the sound a Nerf football makes when you throw it.

No, it is the new BMW Supercar, the BMW Z Spyder Stradale that should remplace the BMW Z8.

Of course the 1M won't have that soundtrack, the S14 is a 4 cylinder, the N55, in the 1M as the S55, is a I6, two diff soundtracks would be expected.

What Scott seems to being saying is that the E46 CSL had 360 hp and similar deminsions as the 1M, that their are similar attributes in handling, etc. And he also said that hp will top off around 360 PS.

I understand that it would sound different, but 90% of the emotion of a performance car is the sound. Have you seen the threads about quads? Perception is reality around here. Induction sound on an ///M car with the throttle plates so close to the intake ports (sorry S52) is as much a seller as the 0-60 times and ring times. The intercooler ruins that.

The #1 comments when then ring videos showed up were "I hope it isn't going to sound like that", "where are the quads". Most were disappointed when they found out that the sound on one of the videos was the GTS in the background.

How are they going to make it sound like an ///M car? An S engine with CF airbox and alpha n is pure ///Motorsports soundtrack. This car will disappoint in this area and should not be compared with the CSL unless a disclaimer is made.

I get what you are saying, kinda like how everybody says that the Lexus LFA's 4.8 liter V10 is one of the sweetest sounding V10s (thanks Yamaha), and they even pipe it into the cabin, as I think they have done for the new 5.0 mustang. Sound is a strong selling point, because it evokes emotion---passion. Kinda like one's significant other calling their name in "that voice".

Hopefully, the exhaust experts will tune the exhaust to a plesant sound. Remember this car is halfway finished.

But, I take it that Scott is just giving a baseline on the chassis and handling aspects of the car and the most similar is the CSL.

I always thought that the S54 sounds like crap. Never could get to liking the rasp that so many people love. I love the sound of my N54. Why do people always say such negative things about boost?

It is now all systems go. We will launch the car in December so currently we are in Pre-production with tests ongoing both in an abandoned airstrip in Germany , and the production crew are doing tests with a 135i as we speak in Los Angeles for our arrival later this summer.

What I can tell you is that I have indeed had my time behind the wheel of a prototype and I am compiling a report for hopefully later this week or (realistically) probably for the weekend.

What will disappoint some is that although the car is half finished with the deadline almost upon us. Is that not many have had the opportunity to sample the M3 CSL, which in a way adds to the unexpectedness of what such a car was like. Others who have driven the CSL might see it as being all too familiar and depends on whether they had a good relationship with the car. Although many have a love-hate relationship with the 135i.

As for now M3 CSL is the closest comparison.
This will be great news for those waiting for this car and might just convince those doubting an FI engined M car could possibly be exciting but the very fact that you are stating it's a similar experience to that of the CSL is amazing.

Weight is clearly making itself felt which is great. Reading your comments between the lines I am of the impression that this will be the BMW trackday car of choice which given the ease as such engines can be tuned should mean GT3 drivers watch out.

Wouldn't it stand to reason that if BMW is producing more Turbo cars, that more Cars with Turbos would be in the shop?

I don't understand the correlation? I belong to an Audi club and I know plenty of guys who track turbo Audis and Porsches and there are no more turbo failures than any other brand? Do you have numbers to support this?

So long as you maintain proper upkeep turbos can last for a long time.

Just look at rally cars. Those things are turbocharged and they have to keep going all day at redline for thousands of miles in blistering heat and painful cold without fail. I can also guarantee that rally cars are more abused than track cars.

You should get your mind out of the 80s and realize that technology has come a long way in 30 years.
