software updates

So, I am bringing my 135i DCT in to get a software update. I am particularly interested in SIB 12-15-14, because I do experience some lurching and hesitation.
The tech stated that you cannot pick and choose which update, it will do all of them, so could take between 10 minutes and 10 hours.
My question is this- if I get a full update, will this one be included or is this kind of a like a one off "hot fix" that you must have diagnosed before it can be applied?

Also, after you have the software updated, do they tell you what updates were applied, and what level you were at before? I really want to fully understand a. where the car stood as far as software versions pre-update and b. which particular updates were applied and what do they effect.

Any input is appreciated!

If 12-15-14 is in fact the latest software update then yes, you will get that SIB reflash.

The SIB # should be on the service sheet they give you after everything is set and ready to go.

I had my 2012 135i flashed by Crevier BMW and the service sheet stated "12-15-14 SIB reflash".

No more jerky DCT, hesitation or stalling .

Question. Is the SIB 12-15-14 a specific piece of the software or is it the entire reflash? I'm trying to understand how DME flashes work.

Is your car under warranty? Mine doesn't have a warranty, curious how much Irvine BMW would charge to do the software update

Were you out of warranty long or was it a grace period kind of thing?

I was at 52K miles and the car was 5 years old.
In my letter, I told them I considered the hesitation a safety issue.

Smart thinking, and honestly, it is a safety issue.

Just had my car flashed this morning at an independent shop. Was advised that I had the latest software installed from Dec 2015. All modules were flashed.

Drove for about 45 minutes since then and the hesitation is gone. So far so good.

Day three and still no signs of hesitation or surging.

Do these updates have any negative effects regarding the engine's performance?

I have the surging problem and hesitation off idle; otherwise, the cars runs just fine.

I did 12-15-14 and didn't notice a performance difference. Unfortunately, the car is much quieter now (less pops and gurgles). Also, only fixed the hesitation for about a month and then came back. I'm pretty sure it was just the dct adaptation reset that accompanied the software update that fixed the hesitation initially and came back after adaptions were relearned. IMO, update is not worth the trouble.

Any chance you have a copy of this letter? Please PM if so.

Thank you!

Asked my CA about this (E82 out of standard warranty), and this would be a customer pay update, not covered by BMW. Would love a copy of that letter too.

A lot of people say PPK fixes some, if not all, of the issues associated with the DCT. I had PPK installed in 2011 and haven't had a software update since then as well and have had none of the DCT problems that some others have experienced.

Rehash: PPK in 2011 also fixed it for me but the next reflash they did (undocumented and not requested) turned it bad again even though the PPK was still in place. It wasn't until the flash that specifically targeted this issue was released that things got better. Still not quite as predictable as the original PPK flash but I can live with it.
Congrats on not getting any flashes after the PPK.

I make it clear to my service advisor "no software updates" and make sure it is written on my work order.

Sometimes hanging a note from the rear view mirror(or taping a note to the dashboard) so the tech see's it when he works on your car - is an even better way to make sure - your wishes are followed.

This works well for when you do not want your car washed at the dealership. Sometimes the SA forgets to tell the guy who actually works on your car or ends up washing it.

IF you get the "wastegate fix" the SW update could kill your engine's throttle response. Your dealer needs to make sure that you do not want the WG fix. ie: you don't mind noisy injectors and WG's.

Has anyone contacted BMW regarding 29.2 and lag?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147781

FYI -paying out of pocket(out of warranty) for a SW update runs about one to two hours labor at most dealers. For N55 guys the PPK sw is out on the web. You only need the ODBII cable to flash your car to a PPK sw. For N54's... no one has released or uploaded the PPK sw yet for N54's.

I found my original letter and sent it to those who requested a copy.

Another thing to mention is that I have a very good relationship with my service adviser and she probably went to bat for me as well.
