SA doesn't know what he's talking about? (Re: PPK1)

So I asked a dealership for a quote to get the PPK1 (SW-only) installed on a 2012 Msport 135.

I was quoted $2811, with a dealer cost of $1900 - which is, of course, ridiculous.
I verified that he was talking about PPK1, not PPK2, and he said yes, that because it is an M sport bumper, there needs to be some special ducting installed, etc, which I had never heard of.

Guy is smoking crack, right?

Cavpilot2k > PPK1, is ONLY a software ECU flash. It will bump you up about 30hp (give or take). Anyways, there is no hardware involved. The hardware comes into play on the PPK2. Hate to say it, but your local dealer reps are moooooo-rons!

Don't feel bad, mine aren't any better. In fact, BMW of NA (the mothership if you had to put a label on it), doesn't even know what the appropriate OEM replacement battery for a 1M is.

Cavpilot2k > I would get a JB4. For about $500, you get the most bang for your buck. Not only does it surpass the PPK1's capabilities, but it's scalable in the event that you want more power in the future.

The code reading, clearing, and logging alone is worth the $$ in my opinion.

Tun3d: I plan on getting the JB4. This came up as I am in final negotiations for the purchase of the car, and I wanted to get their quote and try to negotiate it in as a freebie, or deeply discounted.

Then, I would at least have all the lovely burbles and pops until I get the JB4 (the car already has the BMWPE installed).

I really just posted this out of annoyance that the dealer rep is so clueless.

Go on the BMW USA website and find PPK1/2 - should indicate pricing. Print the pages and take them in. It should give them the correct part numbers to reference lol. Make sure to bring a camera to immortalize the look on the SA's face once they clue in.

On BMW's website, they are quoting $800, not including installation. I'll bet you can talk them down 15% or maybe even 20%. My dealer is always willing to negotiate, of course I've been a loyal customer since 2008, when I bought my first 135i. It doesn't hurt to try.

Or you can go with the Cobb, easy install, plug and play. If you don't want to mess around with the wiring harness, Cobb is the way to go. I love it..

I'd love to do Cobb, but I can't. It's a 2012. I will have to verify build date, but pretty sure it's past the cutoff for being able to accept a Cobb.

They have no intention of fixing it either, apparently.

That's very disappointing and puts them in a negative view. Very upsetting that a company like Cobb has not put the R&D into this product.

I don't think it makes COBB look bad. How many 2012+ 135s are there? Of them how many will actually buy an AP? 30? Over 3 years? It doesn't make financial sense.

I imagine they would sell quite a lot more than 30, but your point is still valid. To accommodate two model years of a relatively low-production car, there is not a good ROI. I understand why they aren't doing it, but it still disappoints me, as it would be my tune of choice IF I could get it.

As it is, aside from niche and custom tunes later-models are left with PPK (not a lot of power), JB4 (great bang-for the buck plus code-reading, but still a piggyback), or Dinan (break out the wallet).

IMHO JB4 is the clear winner there due to its versatility and added features, plus it's the cheapest of the two and has a very large, very satisfied customer base with excellent support. I'd love to go Dinan, but their vaunted warranty only matches the factory warranty, so if you are past factory warranty window, that extra $$ you pay for that warranty is wasted. Therefore, to me Dinan is only worth it if you put it on a relatively new car with at least 3 years of factory warranty left.

Sounds like they were quoting you the cost for the performance bumper + cold air pack + PPK2. Those numbers would add up better to that astronomical total they gave you.

LOL

Edit: 2k posts!

Check again on that Dinan warranty, because you get 2 years if you're out of factory warranty when you buy the software upgrade. I did this on my 2007 E92 335i (S3), and never had any related issues.

I did PPK1 first then JB4.. I regret it on occasion, but the car does have a much nicer exhaust note with the PPK1 and the PE than if it was just the JB4 alone!
