3rd Brake Light - Question About Warranty

My 3rd brake light lens is starting to crack and separate from the trunk lid. I've done some searching on here and it looks to be a common problem and there is a TSB on it too. That said, my OEM warranty has expired but I still have my CPO warranty.

Would the dealer cover this regardless of warranty status because of the TSB? Or is this covered under the CPO?

I'm planning to call my dealer in the AM, but I wanted to get educated on the subject in case they try to pull a fast one on me.

You need to read what your CPO covers. Some CPOs extend the manufacturer's warranty. If so, you are covered.

Its BMW's CPO warranty and it extends the manufacturer's warranty. I was looking for feedback from someone who had this happen while under CPO.

TSB are covered under the maker's warranty. If the CPO extends the maker's warranty, you are covered.

I'm in the same boat and called them this morning. Mentioned the TSB and the issue being common. The rep said I would need to bring it in to determine if the warranty covers it. Appt is next Monday.

That is definitely not true. There are several exclusions on Certified cars, including bulbs, batteries, interior noises, brake noises, water leaks, seals, so on and so forth...AND lenses and lense assemblies. TSBs don't mean a thing.

Thank you both. I'll give them a call to see whats up tomorrow. How easy is it if I decide to buy the part and do it myself?

NO warranty covers wear and tear which is what the two long lists above are mostly about.

A TSB or Technical Service Bulletins are recommended procedures for repairing vehicles. Not to be confused with recalls, a TSB is issued by a vehicle manufacturer when there are several occurrences of an unanticipated problem.

In general, they are a needed or necessary fix for a vehicle. You might consider it as something that should have been done when the car was built but was over looked. Now the maker wants to correct his mistake.

For example, my Mercedes recently went in to have some item installed to shield the wiring from an oil leak. In any case, if you have a car still under warranty, you should check the TSBs for it. You might be surprised what you'll find.

Once they replace it, I recommend you go in there and loosen the retention nuts a bit. They are held in with a nut on top of a spring. I found mine installed too tight and the springs were completely compressed, thus overloading the plastic lens. I don't think it takes much tension on the springs to keep the lens in place and still retain a good seal with the trunk.

See, it doesn't hurt to try. So it wasn't covered, but your dealership is doing the good thing.

How do you know his will be over-torqued!? FYI, they should be tightened inside outwards to 2.5nm. That's pretty darn light.

Turns out the warranty covered 95%. Thanks to my SA.

Shouldn't the updated torque spec be included in the TSB?

I'm just sharing my experience where it was over-torqued and the springs were compressed to their stack height.

So I called my dealer and they quoted me $350 to replace. I told them to get bent. I'll do it myself.

Mine has had a crack in it since I bought the car in October, 2010. Nothing's ever fallen out. Don't use my trunk that often. Like... NEVER! That's probably got something to do with it. You think?

Anyone have a part number and/or link to buy one of these?

My son's 128i has this problem, and it's out of warranty, so we thought we'd see about doing it ourselves.

Thanks!

Not sure if it's the same for the 128.

Part 63257164978. GetBMWParts has it for $70. Get that and not some cheap knock-off.
