128 owners should be happy, they have a great car that should run maintence free for a longer life span than the 135i due to not having turbos. 1 series is a great looking car, regardless of having a 128,130, or 135. If you decided to purchase a 128i the only mods if you decide to go that route should be cosmedic. Why spend the 2k-3k on modifying a N/A motor when you could have spent that same money on a 135i. I just dont see the point. Trying to squeeze more preformance out of a N/A motor is so pain stakenly frustrating / expensive, I dont recommend it the gains are never what you want them to be. I completely disagree trying to MOD the engine on 128i money could be spent elsewhere IMO. If you want more performance get a 135i. Yes i read the begining post im not trying to flame.

My car is BA and fast to boot. Same 0-60 as older 350z's and get great mileage (currently mixed driving ~30), I am just saying for down the road, when I do feel I want more power (hence, 2-4 yrs). Not immediate. Besides, there are people out there, kind of like myself, who like squeezing hp out of NA motors. I love to squeeze every bit of hp out of a motor without blowing air into it, even though that will yeild the best results. I COULD put a 200 shot on this beast and blow a motor though...jk

cut the resonator and put some pipe there, so we can see how it sounds. probably won't help the power but it might add a little bit more performance sound out of the purty I motor.

Anyone checked into what the stock final drive ratio is? The 3.46 diff is a common mod for the E46's, which is actually by far the most effective "power" mod (even though it doesn't actually increase horsepower, just torque multiplication.)

1'er coupe final drive ratios courtesy of member wnta135 in another forum:

135i MT - 3.08
135i AT - 3.46
128i MT - 3.23
128i AT - 3.73

Putting a 3.46 or 3.73 into a manual 128i would yield significant 1/4 mi improvements and overall acceleration. Not sure if 128/135 diffs are directly interchangeable, or if any mechanical differences exist.
