Interesting difference between the normal and hot climate 128i
I always wondered what the differences were between the hot climate and normal versions of our 128's.
As I was having some fun looking through parts diagrams I noticed that there is a different fan specified for 128's with and without hot climate. Part Number: 17117590699 - fan assy w/o turbo, w/o hot-climate Part Number: 17427562080 - fan assy w/o turbo, w/hot-climate Doing research on the part numbers, it turns out that the normal fan is 400 watts and the hot climate version is 600 watts. Here is the diagram if anyone is interested: http://https://www.getbmwparts.com/p...iagram=1981070 |

I've mentioned this before but why do places like Europe, South Africa, Australia, etc., get an oil cooler with their N52 (125i, 130i) but we don't get them here? Have the folks in Munich never spent time in places like Arizona,Nevada, Texas, SoCal, and the Gulf States? Many places here in the US are just as hot, if not hotter than those places.

Fully agree that is somewhat annoying and, looking at it from a climate perspective, definitely does not make sense. That being said, perhaps it has something to do with there being higher speed limits in these foreign places? Maybe a BMW selling to the average foreign buyer sees harder use than the average one selling to a US buyer.
More than likely it was them cheeping out with us though. |

2002ish did you try looking up this fan via your VIN ?
As far as I thought... all US spec cars(128i's and 135i's) get the hot climate option. Dackel

Dackelone I know mine is a hot climate version from a vin search.
I think you are right that all the US cars are hot climate versions. I've never seen a BMW here without the option. I'm not saying it's special I just always wondered what the hot climate option actually gave the car... and now knowing its a 600 watt fan for the 128i... I think its a cool stat. |

That doesn't make sense - if all US cars are hot climate version then why don't the N52 engines have oil coolers?
Yes, Autobahn speeds are worthy of an oil cooler (though they don't have Autobahns in Australia). But, sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in Huston, Miami or Phoenix when it's over 100* is far tougher on an engine's cooling capacity. |

KNS I haven't driven the car hard enough to get any kind of temperature warning lights, etc. and I do not have a way of monitoring oil temp. This theory doesn't make sense considering other countries get the oil cooler but is it possible that our engines overheat water before oil? Obviously I would personally rather have the oil cooler and it appears to be a cheap out by BMW but one benefit I can see to not having it is slightly less complexity in the cooling system. Furthermore, I know Ford touted that coyote 5.0 mustang gt's didn't need an oil cooler because they had a 7 quart oil capacity (as do we).

Oil temp will always exceed water temp but water temp is thermostatically controlled. Oil temp is also kept in check on the N54/N55 turbo engines by means of an oil cooler with a T-stat.
My Porsche, which is air/oil cooled has twelve quarts of oil in the system along with a massive oil cooler. Porsche mechanics who work on these cars in the southwest (or race cars) will tell you to do what you can to keep oil temps reasonable even if that means adding a second oil cooler - which I did. The additional cooler showed a nice improvement in oil temp. |

I think there is also a coding tweak available to boost which ever fan you have for faster air circulation.

Whatever they used to covert kilowatts to HP was just wrong. 172 kW is 230.6557994 HP.

600w coding and extra wire..?
Does anyone know what determines the correct operation of a 600w fan? I have a replacement fan, but looking for which code is it that gives the car OK to use the extra power.
My other issue is that my wiring loom has 3 cables, but my fan has clearly 4 going into the motor. I bet it'd work, but I'd like to know where is the 4th wire meant to be connected as I can buy a 4 wire fan connector which means that 4 wires should be coming to the fan not just 3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :dunno: Thx! |
