Exactly. I shake my head every time someone expresses they want an AWD M5 - for that reason.

I'll just leave these here:

I don't think they're poser cars anymore than those BMWs that have a CF roof, splitter, and mirrors. Now I can see if EXTENSIVE mods were done on said Bimmer in order to decrease the weight significantly but still, CF can look like you're posing.

The only issues I have with Audi is the FWD setups and how their front axle isn't as far up as it could be.

Also, yes, BMW >>> Audi.

For sure 1M is far better on the track than RS3
Audi tried to make it more practical, they knew somehow that they can t be faster than 1M

It does seem like a waste of time but Fifth Gear has never been sure what it is trying to achieve, is it Top Gear Lite? is it a serious car review show? Who knows?

Top Gear is by far the best 'Car Porn' there is.

I think that Fifth Gear tries too hard. They cram way too much in a 20 minute show.

Do you think in this test it would've mattered much? Even my grandmother can drive the RS3 fast.

So even with the wider tyres at the front than the rear the RS3 is still a understeering pig?

By the way, love your name. Awesome 80's reference.

I disagree, though, with the RS3's interior. No way, too busy. There's too much going on. With performance cars I tend to side with "less is more."

I owned a b5 s4 and it was a better car overall imho than the e36 m3. The b7 rs4 sure looks good but it still wasn't as good as its rivals. I will say that Audi does a great job of making fast nice cars that can used in all weather conditions.

However, just like everything else the specialists tend to perform better in their field than a generalist. It takes way more than the price range of this car to make awd perform at the level of a rwd sports car.

Funny, this is what Audi drivers used to say about BMW drivers 10 years ago.

It's not a matter of tire width, it's because part of the power is going to the front wheels. It's a problem of physics and vehicle dynamics more than tires.

Unlike the TT-RS, S4, S5, and RS5 cars, a sports differential and torque vectoring is not available on the RS3. It's the only car in the lineup that compensates using wider front tires.

It's physics and without electronic nannies, it's hard to get a AWD car to not understeer, especially a front-engine. Almost all vehicles, yes even BMW's, have an inherent amount of understeer built in for safety reasons. The avg road driver can correct an understeer situation easier and if not, in a collision, you are more likely to impact head-on where there is more protection between you and the other object instead of the side. BMW's staggered setup on many of its cars balances its tendency to oversteer, as the front tires are narrower (it also gives a sporty stance / look).

I understand all this. Was just implying that Audi knew that there would be chronic understeer with this car and decided to fit wider tyres in the front but yet on the fifth gear test the test driver was complaining that the understeer was getting worse as the tyres got hotter.

Have to disagree with you. Having run a B5 RS4 for 18 months, there is nothing "clost-but-no-cigar" about that car. With relatively minor tuning (I had 100cell cats and a remap, taking it to 450bhp) it got two cigars ;-)
