Seeking advice on an aftermarket GPS system

Looking to get an aftermarket NAV system for the 135i as luckily I don't have the i-Drive. Been looking mostly at the Garmins, specifically the 265WT series, which can be picked up for mid $200s at this point. Seems like a nifty little gadget, especially considering I want to retrofit bluetooth in the 135, and this particular model has a built in function so I can pair it to my phone and not worry about getting the expensive module from BMW. Also Garmin offers lifetime free real-time traffic with this unit, which in theory should be great (though reviewers say it is a bit tardy).

What has been your experience with aftermarket GPSs? Any other models in the Garmin lineup, TomTom, Magelan, etc.? Appreciate the advice.

i got he 265wt two months ago. the traffic service is not that good. can't rely on it. overall the unit is great for the price you pay. nice to transfer points of interest or any address from your google maps to the unit, (it is a bit slow to transfer)

-battery is good.

-it also has a nice inventory of POIs

-bluetooth is also good and loud

-not good for pic viewer, as the resolution is not optimum for pics

-speed limit display is very helpful

Thx guys! Have you ever tried pairing it up with your cell phone and taking calls through its BT interface? Wonder how the sound quality is...

Its a bit ghetto, but just buy a copy of MS Streets and Trips with the GPS reciever. And buy a power inverter to plug the laptop into the cigarrete lighter in the center console. Whole operation cost me $110. Also. S&T has some exceptionally nice features.

I dunno if 'ghetto' is the right word for a fine piece of tech gadgetry (vs. putting chrome 21" spinners on the car LOL), but to each their own. As I mentioned, I may get the 2-in-1 bang for the buck if indeed that will get me to place and receive calls via the Bluetooth. Does MS streets have real-time traffic?

Also, I travel around Europe a lot so was thinking of buying the European map on the SD card from NavTeq and I can carry this thing with me on my travels (beats a laptop!)

I have a Garmin 265wt also, I love it and it does everything I want. Pairs great with my iPhone and I don't really care much for the traffic thing, since no matter where traffic here in Miami sucks... but great little gadget for the price.

Recently purchased a Garmin 265WT as well. I like the portability, moving it from one vehicle to another. On our first trip with the GPS we stopped for fuel off the interstate and the kids suddently became hungry and indicated they would like BBQ. So we were able to punch that into the GPS and find a BBQ joint 1 mile away. The 4 year old thought that was really neat. The BT seems to work pretty well. The only complaint was that callers on the other end appeared to have some problems hearing us and asked that we repeat ourselves numerous times. It is not as convenient as the BMW BT with the ability to handle calls on the steering wheel. The traffic updates seemed to work well in Atlanta but it appears that the coverage is sporadic outside of the major cities.

I use one of the lower end Garmin unit (Nuvi 200 I think) and it works great. I travel all the time for work and bought it with that in mind, but I use it on trips even when I know the route now, just for the ETA feature and the ability to find whatever food I want along the route.

A unit that's $200+ should get you all the features you need right now, and they're worth every penny on a long trip.

Got a Garmin for XMAS and I really like it--I never thought I would miss or want navi in my car, but the Garmin is the perfect compromise.

I have a Nuvi 350, used it here and in Europe. Now it sits in my wife's car...

I was thinking of getting the 755t, a little more expensive but it has some nifty new features.

PM me and I'll set you up with the Euro maps if you'd like.

So buying a purpose built unit that can easily be mounted in a place on the dash or windshield where it's out of the way yet still easy to reach and see is ghetto but using a laptop that I assume is placed on the passenger seat is not? Please explain? Also, did you factor your laptop and power inverter in the cost?

I use a Nuvi 350. I've had it a while now and it's worked pretty well. The Garmin stuff is pretty good. The advantages of using one of these vs. the iDrive is that it can be taken to other vehicles or run off battery while you're walking around and it costs a lot less. iDrive has some advantages too, like giving you more control over certain features in the screen and better integration.

You might also want to look in the electronics forum, there's been a number of discussions on mounts, etc. that you might want to look at.

No I said what I do with my laptop is a bit ghetto. And I've had my HP for a year now (so that wasn't factored in) but I did factor in the inverter. The software with the reciever cost me $80 and the inverter cost me $30.

And I recieved a small LCD screen from my dad that I will be making a mount for out of the useless tak-on coupholder. I have two because my one from the factory was defective and broke the day I picked up the car. And yes...this is very ghetto but i almost never use a GPS and when I do im almost never by myself so the passenger plays navigator.

I have pretty much decided on the 265WT. I don't see the rationale to pay double for the 765t considering the only thing it has extra is...lane assist! Now if I need someone to tell me I need to be in the left lane to make a left turn, then I deserve to have my license revoked! LOL
