1 series hatchback in Canada???
Hi guys,
I've been an audience to this forum for a month and registered to ask you guys the question. Any of you know, if we are getting 1 series hatchback? I've been researching on the web and there is no sign that we will see hatchback and some says it is not even meeting Canadian auto standard, so we can't even import it. I think it would be a great hit (just as mini), however it was BMW's decision to miss the opportunity in North American market. I am considering to upgrade my ride to something that is practical yet sweet. I think 1 series hatchback would just do that! If we can't see them anyways, I am also considering to buy 128i. I've already test droven it while back when it was first introduced, but I thought I wouldn't be able to stick my snowboards through the ski hole. Any body tried? Any information would be greatly appreciated. |

I just put half of the back seat down in my 135 and can easily get my snowboard in my car. I dont remember exactly from my test drive, but doesnt the 128 also have a 60/40 rear seat?

Because when I test drove 2008 model, it had a ski hole. Thanks for your info anyways. I test drove 2009 128i today, and it felt great. Looking into buy one before my car warranty expires. Do you have any idea what invoice price would be on 128i? for 2008 and 09? with fully loaded pkgs except navi. |

What the hell?!? Do all 135 coupes have the 60/40? No way.
Had the car for 10 months and never realized that... true? If the hatch comes, I'd sell the STI in a heartbeat

I agree! BMW is making a huge mistake not bring it in soon enough. And I also didn't know that 1 series rear seat folds 60/40. If I can hold my breath for hatchback, I am more than happy to wait a year or so. But no body informed me it is the plan. |

Work in Progress.
Hi Guys,
I know a lot of you have expressed interest in the 1 Series Hatchback that is offered in other BMW Markets but not in North America. We are currently trying to see if it is feasible in bringing the 1 Series Hatch to Canada. Don't get too excited, but just know that we are listening. My personal perfect BMW would be a 123d M Sport 5 Door Hatch Back. =P Reply and lets get this thread hot so that we can show that there is interest in such a vehicle. It's unfortunate that we don't have the World Green Car of the Year this side of the pond. (BMW 116d) We just recently got a new President at BMW Group Canada, and he is very motivated into getting people what they want. So make some noise!! Lets make it happen. -DK |

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply. Finally we've got someone who has a significant influence to BMW on our side. Please tell us how soon we will be able to see this hatch 1er in Canada and what trims are on the question table? As far as I know BMW is just worried that this will cannibalize the sale of MINI, however I see BMW and MINI in totally different perspectives. If this was so much of concern to BMW, X1 shouldn't have been planned as it will eat up X3 sales. There are thousands of reasons why 1 hatch should come into N.A. market, and with economic, environmental and efficiency issues, only smaller and more practical cars will survive in such a saturated auto market. So the feasibility analysis would not matter the decision on the introduction of hatch. I heard BMW also worries that more compact, more efficient trims will dilute the aggressive and more of performance image of BMW, but that's what Buick and other North American automakers stick with when Japanese cars were stealing all of young buyers market in the couple of decades ago. I'd say bring it in ASAP, otherwise those buyers will go to VW dealers to get GTI. |

I wouldn't *kill* for a 123d M-Sport 5-door, but I might be willing to waterboard someone.

Why, given the 1-series hatchback has been widely reviewed as the WORST car that BMW makes (possibly ever) would you want it over here? It has a market in Europe (barely) given that small cars are just about required to get around anywhere...it's all but the top echelons of society that buy anything bigger, so there is a way to sell the baby-Bimmer.
In North America, where the space to park you car is nearly limitless, gas is 1/3 to 1/2 as expensive, etc... and decent to above-average Japanese hatchbacks abound, the 1-series hatchback would flounder...as have all other previous attempts at such sized cars from European companies...perhaps the only exception being the Volvo C-30, which is bigger than the 1-series. As much as some above might wish to sell their whatever cars for the BMW, the vast majority of people over here would not. Face reality...

Truth told!
If you were to have a look at in perspective of sales. Canada probably would do well. The US doesn't want another hatch back, they don't buy them. Look at what is selling the F-150!
Canada would not be able to produce enough sales to carry the NA market. So... We won't see it. |
