I suppose it was inevitable. 0029CD
About 2 minutes into my commute this AM, the engine started showing the classic signs of a misfile followed by the "service engine soon" light.
A quick Carly code showed the above error. I had anticipated this not long after purchasing the car, but I didn't expect it less than 3 weeks into ownership. I already ordered coils and plugs (even if it's not a coil, I want them anyway) and will be doing it within a few days. I've seen topics about carbon cleaning. Does anyone have a writeup that they can share? Or is it just a matter of running a can of the Liqui-Moly equivalent to Seafoam through the system? My plan is to swap the coil for #2 to verify fault. The valve cover was replaced just before I purchased it, but I don't know if the plugs were. (I got replacement plugs too. I'm fairly competent under the hood, though I am new to BMW. The procedure looks straight forward if not a little fiddly. Any advice on what to expect? |

I took off my vanity cover on my engine to allow easier access to the coils, plugs and ESS. Take it off and you can swap coils around and see if it follows one or the other. Where in MA are you from?? |

But wait, there's more!
Along with the 0029CD error, I also received these:
002E7B - Ignition timing at part load, cold start 002A43 - Valvetronic, thermal overload protection: Warning threshold. Happy Holidays to me. |

First thing to look at with random unrelated error codes is your battery condition. Run the car down to your local shop and have them load test it. Most will do the test for free.

Get a thin walled spark plug socket. You will need a 14mm 12 point socket. I believe BMW sells one thru the parts dept. I use a Hazet #4766-2

Especially on cold starts? You might look closely at your plastic valve cover... they are known to develop cracks. Dack

It starts cold just fine, but it shakes all over the place and has a serious lack of power. Just before I purchased the car from the dealer 4 weeks ago, there was a valve cover oil leak that they replaced. I'm wondering/hoping that something got contaminated. Coil or Valvetronic or some other component. The car is there now and I won't know anything until the end of the week. I couldn't drive it home. |

Okay, so I got the car back from the dealer I bought it from. They tell me it was a bad coil (pictured)
My question is, this shouldn't be caused by normal wear and tear, should it? They replaced the valve cover just before I purchased and I'm wondering if it was mishandled or if this is normal. |

One of mine just failed. Should be covered under the SULEV warranty.

Coils cost about $150 for 6 and are about the easiest thing on our cars to replace. Should be part of regular maintenance. Even more frequent than plugs it seems by all the bad coil issues. I've put 15k miles on my car since I bought it and have just changed coils for 2nd time.

My E85 had 200,000 miles on the original coils and even my current Z4 with the notorious N54 coil eater is doing better than that. I have 30k on four coils and 60k on the remaking two originals. That's a tuned N54 pulling around 15lbs of boost. In retrospect, many of the repeated failures on my E85 were self induced by cheap sub standard parts. Bad Gebo, oil cooler gasket, alternator, idler puller and such. I ran the car on a really tight budget and some purchases were not that wise. |
