Stupid Auto-dimming mirror!

I took off briskly at the lights. Was cruising along at just a fraction above the limit for a few seconds. Then I see someone in the rear vision accelerate and proceed to tailgate me. Was about to boot it...then I had a closer look. Couldnt tell what car it was. Then I suddenly *just* made out some red & blues on his roof. I changed lane immediately as I dont stand for annoying cop tailgating-tactics. Was waiting for him to change with me but he didnt.

He pulled up alonside me at the next lights and I gave a friendly wave.

Was lucky...the ridiculously over-sensitive, auto-dimming mirror could have caused me a fat ticket. Cant even tell if a F430 or a paddy wagon is behind me.

Am I right in that the only way to disable it is to cover the sensor on the actual mirror with something opaque?

i have to agree, i think the auto dimming is flawed. it may be a good if some idiots got their high beam on, but in most situations it just seems to makes it more difficult to see in the dark... not too sure on the best method to disable it...

+1 I've been pinged due to the mirror at night.

Very interested in how it can be disabled.

At the risk of being unpopular, the mirror may dim but my speedo backlight is certainly bright enough to ensure I don't get a private disco light display.

Same here, been pulled over by cop at a bad rainly night just 2nd day after I got the car. I almost can't see the red blue lights from the dimmed mirror at that night with heavy rain. Lucky that no ticket was issued.
I'd rather the auto-dim function only turn on by manual control instead of through the light sensor if possible.

Having tinted windows AND the BMW blinds on the three rear windows, my auto dimming mirror hasn't had a chance to activate yet. I'm not even sure the optional side dimming mirrors work. Hopefully somebody will come up behind me with high beam on during my trip to the Sunshine Coast tonight...

Hi jksgoh. I think I paid around around $US150 before the Aussie dollar dropped. I'm not sure what they cost locally. They're a good neat fit.

Whatever I just passed!

Seriously, vision is obstructed to some extent of course but I don't find it a problem. I just hate getting full sun on the leather interior and always put up a front visor when parked also.

+1

If you can't see what's happening around you, the least you can do is keep careful watch of the speedo

I paid US$176 for both back when the dollar was a little better. United BMW in the US. Now they want US$88 (How do they charge AUS$300 here???) for the rear & US$100 for the sides, plus freight.

Cheers, Tim.
