Advice buying my first BMW 135i

Hi! First of all, I've been reading the forum and it has helped me a lot. So, thank you.

I'm not a BMW owner yet, but I wanted to be one my whole life and now I can afford it (used).

I'm in the market for a 2010 - 2012 N55 135i with good mileage (30k to 50k mi). I don't want to mod it at all. I just love it stock.

Is there major differences between 40k ~ mi and 60k ~ mi? (Like other brands/cars)

I'm asking this because I've found some 135i's with 60k mi that are within my budget and seem to be in pretty good shape. After checking them out and testing them, do you guys think it would be a good decision? Or should I keep looking and waiting for a 40k ~ mi 1er?

Thank you!

The only differences is going to be maintenance items. If you found a nice one, and plan to own it for a while, you're going to have things come up.

My only advice would be to buy a warranty that covers the big items that break if you're not inclined to fix it yourself. Injectors, hpfp, water pump, valve cover.

I would also be looking for an m sport model. Better seats and better suspension. If you can find an 135is I would go that route as it has all the m performance goodies.

Its critical that you get advice and help from a present BMW owner, someone who is also an enthusiast, not just someone who has no interest other than status, looking good in a BMW.
Or, find a good BMW garage and ask them for help. You're going to have to take your car in for service/maintenance. Find your garage now rather than when something breaks. Have them do a pre-purchase inspection (PPI).
Maintenance records/work orders are also also critical so you know the car has been properly maintained.
Good Luck

Oh, and no difference between 40K and 60K really. It's all about proof that maintenance has been done. Cars you're looking at are now 8-10 years old. Owner should be able to supply proof of AT LEAST 10 to 15 oil changes.

Early 135i's had the N54 twin turbo engine. Up to 2010 M.Y. Then for 2011 BMW switched to the single turbo N55 engine. The N55 has slightly less lag, and is slightly better on fuel consumption but less tuner happy.

All cars had problems with the HPFP(High Pressure Fuel Pumps) failing early. BMW NA & Canada extended the HPFP warranty up to 120K miles or ten years. So no big worries. Symptoms are long cold start cranks before the engine fires up to life.

All cars seem to need a new electric water pump and e-thermostat by 60K to 80K miles. ~$1K to 1.2K at the dealers... ~$700 at an indi or less, or ~$500 in parts DIY

OFH(oil filter housing gasket) seem to leak on all cars. Not a cheap repair(~$500 dealer) but DIY doable. $40 in parts

Carbon buildup on the intake valves can also be an issue... ~$500 to $700 at most dealers. Much less at Indi shops.

Brakes and Tires can be a bit pricey but thats about it. Our 1er's are fairly reliable and very much so fun to drive!

Thank you all!

Unlucky for me, here in Argentina we don't have warranty plans. Definitely, I'd do a PPI.

And here, some 2010 135i's have the N55. Maybe it's how they were registered... (?)

Still on the search! I'll post when I find one. My dream is a black 135i M-Sport DCT, stock. Don't care much about the NAV.

Thank you again for your help!

N55 production started mostly from February 2010 and on wards. You can see the build date on the driver's inner door jam.

You can see this on RealOEM.com website when you input the build date - you can see the engine code change from N54 to N55.

Also some early N55's were fitted in the months from September 2009 until December 2009. Probably prototypes and press cars.
