What DI cars did you have before this? Just curious.

The original poster is referring to work that was done on his 128i. The bulletin I posted here makes no mention of the N54, and there are no N54-specific bulletins regarding HVA noise.

I have driven several Audis. Guess Piezzo is a different type of DI then FSI.

I owned a 2006 GTI with the 2.0T direct injection engine, and it made the same amount of racket as the N54.

Could be a result of more sound insulation than anything.

Which brings up an interesting question.

How many of you guys that are hearing noises don't have the pad under the hood? (It seems like some cars got it and some didn't)

I have no pad. That was a bit of a shocker. I always thought that that pad protected the paint from radiated heat. But idk. Maybe...

There's been a lot of talk over the last few years about how to make direct injection engines quiet. It's not easy from what I've read, because of the high pressures. People don't want their cars to sound like diesels no matter how good they run, but that's exactly what DI sounds like.
I love the rawness of the engine. Sometime it feels like I have a small v8 under the hood. Who would want to make it quieter.

My '02 330xi always had a significant tick, as did my E30 325ix. Both getting MUCH louder with age. The 330xi had the M54B30 engine which is what our N54 is based on. The ticking was always considered "normal" by dealers and master techs. My Dad's old E36 M3 had a very loud tick, that car would nearly stall on humid days. BMW power plants have some character you just have to learn to accept.

I brought my 1er in a few months back just before my fuel pump went for a slight ticking noise associated with rough idle. It sounded like a helicopter in the distance. At the time it occurred at all temps, now it's back and only on cold start. Is this kinda what you guys are hearing? I'll mention it again at my scheduled oil change but I'm not too concerned about this.
