$685 walnut blasting?

Hey all, based on pricing you guys have seen/experienced for walnut blasting, my dealership is offering it to me for $685.

I'm thinking that it's a little above what some places charge, but there is the peace of mind that the dealer would be doing it, and (hopefully) correct anything they would f-up in the process (rare, but it has been known to happen with blasting).

I'm an N55 with 80k miles and still under warranty for three more weeks. I wasn't planning on doing it until around 100k, but maybe this is the time.

Thoughts?

It's not like "omg no" expensive, but it's certainly more than it should be. I've seen this done at shops for anywhere between $350-$550.

That said, walnut blast on an N55 is really not required, nothing like the N54. Here's a thread with some more info:

Yeah, I know it's not nearly as bad as the N54, but I'm in the "it can't hurt - only help" camp, even if it's only a small improvement. And I can actually get it for $600 out the door with a discount.

True, I know there are shops within an hour drive of me that I've hear are maybe in the high $300's (bear in mind that I am in one of the most expensive metro areas in the country, so EVERYTHING costs more here), but I'm wondering if it's worth the extra scratch to the peace of mind of a dealership doing it.

Or maybe I'll just hold off until closer to 100k.

I'd wait and shop around a bit, you'll find a better price for sure and you'll get more value out of it if you wait a while. At 100k it'll do a lot more than 80k, and you can plan to get other things looked at then as well since it's a big milestone.

Cavpilot2k for the record I'm also at 80k in my N55 and will likely do the walnut blast whenever I get my shit together lol I have a friend that can do it for me. I'll definitely post pictures before/after the work and details on my mileage, driving habits, and maintenance regimen.

Going to have my first one done this spring at 80k (N54). Do you think I will notice the difference?

(FWIW, my indy charges $350 -- but I got a quote of $800 from my dealership a few years ago)

Should make a difference you'll see and feel on your N54 with those miles. There are threads here with pics of N54s that have been walnut blasted. You should try to take some before and after pics and post them here as well.

Where's your indy ? I'm in CT looking for an indy to walnut my car. I could do it myself but this DIY car stuff is getting a bit old now.

I think it is like gerbiling, but using walnuts, so it's preferred by vegetarians.

Hope this helps!

I have heard that he moved on. After a brief stint with ferrets, which turned out to be a bit large, he's moved on to sugar gliders. They have to be smuggled in, as they are illegal in California.
