Smile Blue_e82 Intro / Build thread?

After a good 2-3 years of heavy lurking on 1addicts I finally decided to introduce myself. I really fell in love with the 1ers when my dad bought his first 128i vert about 3 years or so ago. Never even heard or seen of a 1er till then which surprised me since my dad and I are BIG bmw fans.

I have an 08' 128i in Montego blue with sports package, manual trans, iDrive, and 97k miles. My dad bought the car December of 2016 with a salvaged title from PA with not a lot of front end damage (this is my first car, im 16). We spent 7 months working on it before it was back on the road. I did 90% of the work and he guided me through it. It was a good learning experience about the 1er.

The damage wasnt too bad (impact was above the front impact bar) but was more than expected. Replaced the front bumper, hood, headlights, grilles, radiator, AC condenser, radiator support, and the fan.

Getting close!

Picture right before getting dropped off for painting

The car looks amazing now and the 1M style Bumper really transforms the front of the car. Cant tell you how many compliments it gets in parking lots or gas pumps.

The car is a blast to drive and have put it through its paces with vettes, sport bikes, and sadly a brand new Civic Si that completely blew me out of the water in the turns with the adaptive suspension on twisty back roads and some nice mountain roads. Drove around for a good 6 months or so then I had a run in one night with a fox and a really fat house cat. Did some decent damage to the front bumper and the gravel shield. I hit both of them within 30 minutes of each other. Couldnt even see the fox jump out but I saw the cat jump out and just couldnt react fast enough .

THEN 1 month later someone decided to key my car. Idk who did it and why. A business with a camera pointed right at my car when it happened has denied to even watch the footage or show it to me and sadly they are known for taking bribes....

But good news! The bumper and all of what the fox & cat messed up just got fixed a about 2 weeks ago! Forgot how good the car looks with a front bumper without any damage.

Now that yall are caught up with the car I guess I will list some mods I would like to hopefully do.
  • Turner Motorsport Silicone Intake boot ✓
  • UltraGauge
  • Zhp shift knob
  • CDV delete
  • Ebay $80 ducktail spoiler
  • Steering wheel wrap by MEWANT
  • 3.73 dif
  • Short shifter (idk which one to get yet)
  • Supersprint Section 1 ✓
  • Muffler delete ✓
  • Style 264 Wheels
  • Cool Carbon brake pads front & rear ✓
  • Eibach sway bars 28mm front 15mm rear
  • Homemade ABS plastic front splitter with splitter rods
  • Clutch spring delete ✓

Been planning on making this post but havent had the time to do it. Im glad to be part of the 1er community and hope to stay for quite a while!

Just to clear some things up, I have never caused any problems for my parents and that really paid off since thats the reason why they bought the car for me. I am BEYOND grateful for the car and cant thank them enough. We agreed to take the car and see how much it is worth and I would have to make "payments" on it into my savings account.

Just wanted to add that so I dont get any negative replies or anything.

I'm in a real similar position (no way a 20yo can buy a 10 grand car in its entirety these days) but I've noticed on this forum as long as you're humble about it no one really cares if your parents bought the car. Big difference between being bought a used 128i and a new Land Rover.

Otherwise, welcome!!!!!!! Sport, manual and a fantastic color. Proper 128i spec

Also let me know if you want info on the 3-stage mani on the cheap $$.

chris_flies , I think your 'youngest owner' title may be in jeopardy

I've kinda noticed that too but just wanted to add that just in case.

Thank you for the welcome! I wasnt really considering the 3 stage mani upgrade cause of the cost of it all but now that you say that I might consider it.

Can’t recommend the Turner intake boot. I have noticed no difference from stock. Seems like $60 would be better spent on the intake manifold or something else.

Welcome to the forums!

When did you first get your 1'er? I got mine the day I turned 16 and 3 months (license becomes valid in VA)...

Same boat here, in terms of parents getting the car outright. Got mine on the cheap (on the market for a while, 160k miles), but I've been working hard around the house and earning my share, bit by bit.

I'd look into getting the BMW Performance SSK lever. Yes, just the lever, especially since you want an A/M shift knob. Part number 25117542200. I was gifted one from another user here, and only paid shipping . It's not too notchy like some kits can be, and I really like it. I'd also get a shifter rebuild kit with Teflon oval bushings to really tighten up that shifter.

Xuji makes a good-quality steering wheel wrap for our cars. I have one, and I really like it. The only flaw is my installation of it

Good luck with your car! 1M Bumper is a good way to start...

I got the car when i was 15 and 10 months.

Also got mine on the cheap. 87k miles when we got it and put $7.5k including lots of preventative maintenance into it to get it back on the road. .

Im having a lil bit of trouble finding the Xuji wrap. Maybe im just typing the wrong thing into google or something. Cant wait to enjoy installing a steering wheel wrap though!!

Thank you and same for you! Only flaw with the 1M bumper is that its really low and not too great to have in the middle of nowhere in east alabama ... lots of scrapes.

My parents spent 11.5k on a MKIV gti for me when i was 16. Same case. No trouble was brought home and they knew I would take good car of the car. Which i did and loved for ten years and then the salt ate it away.

Car looks great and you are fortunate you got to have that experience with your dad to fix and maintain the bmw!

Enjoy it!

Welcome to 1Addicts.
I'll echo what others have said - this is generally a very good group of mutually supportive enthusiasts, unlike what I've seen in some of the other Bimmerpost groups.
Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that 1ers are on the low end of the BMW price spectrum, and the snobs don't bother coming here.

Nice car, good job on doing a lot of the work yourself, and it's great that you were able to do a lot of it with your father. Those memories will be priceless.

Welcome to the crew! Great looking car, the 1M rep front end really makes a difference, and that blue is supreme.

I find it SUPER cool that you and your dad bought and worked on the car together, that's an awesome experience and it sounds like you've got some cool parents!

I always drool over those colors. On my way to work I saw a Le Mans M-Sport and it was gorgeous, older guy driving it too.
