Staggered wheels refer to the wheel widths. On our 135i's the rear wheels are wider than the fronts. 7.5 in front and 8.5 inches wide in back. BMW does this to improve the neutral handling of the car.
Non-Staggered wheels are when ALL the wheels are the SAME width front and rear. For example 7J x 17's all around. Like for a winter tire setup. |

Im not sure the narrow fronts do as much to aid 'neutral handling' as they do to increase understear.... Neutral handling would likely be better served with same size front and rear.

The staggered setup is the most popular choice although there are many that run non-staggered. The advantage of running a non-staggered is that you can rotate all 4 tyres if you need to which may be more economical.
The largest wheel we can fit is an 8 inch in the front and a 9 inch in the rear if you don't plan to roll, cut or modify your fenders. I believe it is more advantageous to run the widest I can in the fronts and rears. If were to run an 8 inch all the way around I would actually be using a smaller rear than stock OEM. The non-staggered arrangement is the preferred choice by most of us in terms of looks as well. |
