Will the exhaust shop owner test for exact fitment, for flow improvement versus stock, for dyno results after revisions, the list goes on. Any idiot can throw in some pipes... yes, an exhaust is easy to install, does that mean that research and development that goes into a product like Active Autowerke or Supersprint should go by the wayside? I would MUCH rather choose a company that has a proven performance track record with an "off the rack job" than take my chances that Performance muffler shop owner #3 were an expert in BMW turbo engine performance.. And please don't come at me with the "OP cares about sound" argument.
Not a joke, some people understand sound control and exhaust flow. I'm just lucky I live near this guy. Hes renowned county wide.

I think a one-off could be a crapshoot in getting it right. There is some R&D that should go into designing an exhaust for a given car, and probably some prototyping. There might be a few out there that really know what they're doing and can do a one-off well, but again, seems like a crapshoot.

At the same time, so many 135i exhausts seem to suffer from drone despite being production parts that should have gone through several prototyping stages to optimize these things... I don't think there is enough consumer enlightenment to drive thinning of the herd.
