Talk to me about JB4 map5

I just got my 2008 135i a couple nights ago. Yay for me!

First need to fix a couple of curbed wheels, tint driver and passenger window, and 3m bumper/hood.

After that, I am seriously considering a JB4.

What I don't understand and cannot find much info on is why, it seems, map5 is not very widely used.

If this map actually 'learns' and adapts based on the mods you have, your altitude, etc, shouldn't this be the ideal map to be using?

In theory, I would see this map being a major + for the jb4 in the whole cobb vs. jb4 debate (which I do not want to rehash here). But I have never seen this come up as a reason to go with Jb4.

So, any thoughts, comments on this map and why it is not panacea I would have thought it would be from a tuning perspective? Or am I completely misunderstanding what map5 does/should be used for?

Thanks!

Sounds to me like you are understanding it correctly and map5 is very widely used from what I have seen. It seems like on the forums that it is Terry's primary suggestion whenever people ask what map they should be running on a stock car.

It adapts to IAT, fuel octane, etc. And will ramp up power only on WOT 3rd and/or 4th gear pulls. Last I read it was a conservative ramp up with a quick ramp down in the event of pre knock detected.

JB4 Map 5 autotuning takes place in 3rd and 4th gear. It typically runs conservative but with the right mods can be a beast.
Post here. You will thank me.

hmmm. Could have sworn I read a number of posts where people were not that happy with map5. Maybe I was reading more into those posts than I should have been.

Thx. I had actually just signed up over there.

I will post the equivalent question there. when you say autotuning takes place in 3rd and 4th, does that mean that in the other gears things are stock? Or or that set tuned parameters 1,2,5,6?

That I cannot answer, I've just heard Terry say it learns in 3rd and 4th gear. Just telling you what I've been told. LOL

How come JB4 Stage 2 for the N55 doesn't have a Map 5 auto-tune

Map 5 uses a very conservative tune until you do some 3rd and/or 4th gear pulls (3 to 5 pulls should be plenty). That's the only time that I am aware of that it 'learns' and ups the boost/performance. The changes that it makes during this 'tuning window' are in effect the entire time you are in map 5, all gears, rpms, etc.

Having said that once you change from map 5 to any other map, it goes back to base values and you must do some 3/4 pulls again to relearn.

Terry just responded to my post at n54 tech. He says map 5 is always learning and just drive as you normally would. Also says at my elevation (~3500ft) map1 is probably the best bet.

Never liked map 5 when I had it. Map 1 or 2 was better for me in my application.

I like map 5, personally. I suppose if elevation has something to do with it, that's why since I'm at pretty low elevation. I've tried map 1 and wasn't as happy with it. Map 5 has just been a beast for me. Biggest challenge is putting the power down through the RFTs.

I did some tests with my n54 against a chipped n55 with dpipe and was may be a car over him in map 5 and more than 3 cars on map2. I dont know how many "wot´s" need the map5 to adapt, but we tested like 3 times on map 5.
