Water Pump Question

Let me start by saying I am not much of a mechanic. I have a 2012 128I convertible with 70,000 miles. I have not owned this car for long. The Icon for overheating turned on so I assumed it was the water pump. Bought a new one with T stat. The one I removed looked original. Tried to follow the instructions for bleeding but the pump will not turn on. Checked the fuse power both sides. Followed the bleeding instructions again and no power at the plug going into the pump. Car has been sitting awhile and the battery voltage is 11.8. could that be the issue. What would happen if I just started the car and checked to see if the pump came on after 5 minutes? Sorry if these are silly questions. I am a 74 year old BMW Air Head guy and this is my first BMW car. Thanks, Tom
