Clear Coat damaged by rock chip. Repair possible?
there's a small clear coat chipped off in the middle of my hood (dead center) I think only the clear coat is damaged since I can see the paint still being there (but I'm not sure, I've SGM, so the color of the metal might be similar?)
Is it possible to repair that? It's very small, the biggest "hole" it's like 3mmx2mm area there are some smaller ones like 1mmx1mm. Is it even worth fixing? Or if I leave it "exposed", is the damage going to spread down the road? Thanks |

I had similar happen to me. The ones I have are about the size of a pin head. I had the whole car done with Supagard afterwards as they said it should be ok to protect against minor chips in the paintwork. I am tempted though to get a small brush and fill in the chips at some point just to be safe.

I tried it and quite frankly I was unsuccessful with it. I have two rock chips on my hood that took the clearcoat and paint off. All you can see is black. I filled them in with touch up but it is still visible. I think the only option would be to have the hood repainted and then apply a clear bra.

Internet photos deceive, a proper fix is to apply clear paint to the chip, do NOT get carried-away by applying a huge dollop of clear to the chip, a tiny dab will do-ya', just fill the depression in the clear-coat, lose the brushes, try a toothpick, allow said dab to set/cure.
OK, said dab has cured, now, pay attention, the next part is REALLY important, really, you must consider the consequences of what you are doing while you are doing it, block-sand with 3,000-grit paper (protect the surrounding area!, 3-M blue tape is a start, only a start...), after leveling the clear-coat with the surrounding paint, polish with a 50/50 combination of 3-M Finissee-it and Carnuba paste-wax, blend the repair, be careful, prudence is your alley. Again, be careful, pay attention! Works fer me! Yes, paint really is Cave-man easy. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I've stupid fingers so I guess I won't be able to do it myself. I think I'll take it to a good paint shop and see what they could do. After that, clear bra on the entire hood...
