R comp tire recommendations?

Looking for a set of 275/35 18's. Does anyone have personal experience with one tire or another on our cars that they can share?

Thanks

Track only or are you looking for a tire you can run on the street?

Going to bag them and swap them at the track. I would say 90% track and 10% street.

I run BFG R1 tires on the track and like them a lot.

You might also consider Toyo R888 (or RA1) and the Nitto NT-01 depending on the sizes you want to run.

The Hankook Z214 is also a very good tire.

Hoosier A7 if you really want the true Purple Crack.

The Hankook Z214 is a good entry R-Comp tire to work your way to Hoosier.

Agree about the HooHoo. Since he wanted an R-Comp that he could drive at least some on the street, I left them off my list.

Is really never recommend driving any R Comp to and from the track, even if DOT rating says it's okay.

You can heat cycle the tire out a lot quicker

In my experience, RA-1, R888 and NT-01 fine for occasional, short drives on street (like to motel near the track). Not so good in torrential rain on the highway.

Thanks for the feedback guys. While I think the hoosier is the best tire I am not sure I am quite there yet. I am thinking my next step is an R comp like the RA-1, R888 and NT-01 however I am not sure which one to go with. I was leaning towards the NT-01 because I am told they last a long while but from what I have been reading a lot of people say they are often greasy and do not heat up quickly.

The RA-1 and NT-01 are very similar tires and wear very well -- better than just about any other R rated tire.

Check the sizes are available and make your decision based on that.

I'm told the RA-1 may have the edge for the wet when new because of the tread pattern, before they wear down to slicks...

Yes, lots of racers use full tread RA-1 tires as their rain tire (if they don't run Hoosier wets), although the RA-1 faster in the dry if they're shaved to about 4/32".

I'm uncertain, but believe that the substantially similar NT-01 may come from the factory with 4/32" tread.

I can't speak to the 1M / BMW but I have run R888s on my WRX and I get between 4 and 6 track / autocross days out of them. This includes using them as a normal street tire to drive to / from the track or AC event.

Couple that with them being REALLY fun and legal on the twisties and I've strongly considered a set for the 1M....

Garage List
I have run Conti Slicks and R888s on the track, both are great, trying Yoko Advans soon.

Just an FYI. I don't know about where you live, but here in Ontario, any tire that says "For Racing Use" on them like most R compound are NOT street legal. Does not matter if they have a DOT on them or not.

Several Auto'xers have been busted due to that.

Although, I have been guilty of driving my Rabbit (The SUPERbunny!!!!) with Goodyear cantilever slicks on the street. Nice that you don't have to slow down at all for off ramps.

At least in the U.S., DOT-R tires -- like the RA-1, R888, etc -- are legal for U.S. on the street.
