Staggered or heavy OEM wheels for track
As the title says:
I'm looking for advice on what to use for novice/HPDE1 track days I'm planning on attending this year. I have OEM 207M wheels that can take square 225/45 profile tires AND staggered EC7s with 235/265 profile tires. OEMs are heavy but can be better due to being square. The EC7s, though lighter, may be a hindrance. I know the 128i does not have enough power to even require the rear 265s, but this is what I already have installed on the wheels (street driven tires). I know I'm a novice still and it might not even matter at this point, but wanted to get good advice from the get go. I want to start right and then go from there. I don't even have track mods, except for maybe suspension but that's it. Small 128 brakes with uprated pads for track and a fluid flush. I plan to upgrade to F30 calipers though in the near future. Other than these, nothing else for now. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks again ladies and gents. Cheers! |

Keep the cool wheels on and enjoy the day. I wouldn't overthink it. Slap some new pads on and some higher temp brake fluid and go shred

Yeah, I would say just go out there and have fun. In the future you can swap back the other wheels and tires and see what you think. Guage if you can tell the difference. Challenge yourself to try to notice the difference between the tire sizes, or maybe the actual compounds. For example, you might notice that the car actually feels more neutral with the square setup even though smaller tires. Or you might like how one tire communicates better with you either by sound or feel than the other.
It's all about getting out there and learning your car, learning how to be a safer, (faster?), overall better driver. |

You are overthinking things. Run the lighter wheels and have fun. I am not sure of the weight difference between your options, but my wife's street 19s are 9lb heavier a corner than her 17x9 Forgestar 255/40 RE71r track setup, and that weight difference completely transforms the car. Much more so than having slightly non-ideal widths would.

You're gonna have a blast, man. Just get out there and drive. Looking forward to your review of track day.

Agree, with everyone get out and drive. Bring both sets and see if you like one over the other.
I run the 235 / 265 setup and have run stock. For just starting out you prob won't notice too much difference. Good luck let us know how it goes! |

If the tires on the EC7 set are expensive road tires it would be a pity to damage the shoulders or overheat them by driving on the track. I think it depends more on which tires you prefer to use than the weight of the rims.
