Dreadful serpentine belt squeal
Hello everyone. My name is evan. I'm a usual here on the forums.
I have owned a 135i 2011 n55 for well over 2 years now. I've had the DREADFUL SERPENTINE BELT SQUEEL. Like 5 months into ownership it started happening faintly. I replaced belt and pulley's but noise still kept on. 8 months into ownership my belt snapped, got sucked in through the vibration dampner pulley and cause engine failure stopped timing and seizing up. Fast forward 4 or 5 months when new block is in. Car runs amazing with new motor But that same f****** noise is back. Here's a list of everything I've replaced over the last 2 years to try and solve that squeel. Not in order. Most in which where fine and never needed replacing. -Alternator -Compressor -Waterpump -Vibration Dampner -belt tensioner pulley -basically all pulleys were replaced with like 4 belts. Anyone with insight pleasee help! Update I held my stethoscope to every pulley and heard the source coming from The deflection pulley(11287578675). Replaced it and sure enough noise is still there. When holding the stethoscope on the new one... it sounds the same.. wtf is going on here. HELP! |

I'm sure you've already done this, but I just want to make sure.
I had the same issue. Turns out, my power steering pulley was loose. It isn't uncommon for the bolts holding it to loosen up or fall out.

Is the noise constant or comes and goes?

I have an update for all. I have replaced the tensioner again with the oem bmw part. Along with the new belt. I've been about 2 weeks with the new tensioner and belt. and the squeal is gone. I hope for good.
I believe since the crank vibration Dampner was bad.. it caused too much stress on the new tensioner I installed and funked it up. now with every pulley replaced including the Dampner that caused a ruckus.. It's completely sound. I'll keep everyone updated so we can get these squealing n55s fixed. |

Wow.. lucky to get a new motor for that!
I've heard of harmonic balancers doing funny things but was there much wobble in your old one? How about the new one? I have seen even brand new N55s have wobbly balancers. |

When my N55 was making noise I replaced the belt, pulleys, and tensioner and the noise came back after a couple days. Ended up being the OFHG slowly leaking oil onto them and causing them to make noise. (Diagnosed by BMW)
Not sure if you've looked into that possibility.

I've got a squealing belt now, at least until the engine gets nice and hot.
Haven't done any troubleshooting, but I am hoping to be able to fix it myself.
