The situation in condos and appts means it is hard to get a charge. Condos cost the same or more than houses in areas like San Francisco so it isn't about being able to afford a house - there's no affordable houses on the market!

Not often, but there are 2 reasons for it to happen:
1. traveling long distance. My wife has the "family" car, it's a gas car so problem is solved, we would take her car.
2. Going for a "joyride". This is were the battery is the killer. I happen to live close by some of the best roads in america, they are about 100 miles away from home. So the roundtrip would deplete completely the electric charge, leaving no juice for the actual joyride. And since it's in the middle of the mountains and there are actually only 2 gas stations in a 50 miles radius, don't bet on a quick charger. That removes all "sports" car credentials for me.

So in essence, it is a nice commuter 2nd car that uses no gas. It does have some serious acceleration, and it's a nice tool for someone that wants to use it that way. But it is not a sports car, and cannot pose as one anyway you look at it. Tesla seems to have found a sweetspot market, which is surprising, because at this price point, the customers do not care about fuel bills. When the novelty factor wears out, they should have a plan to bring something that makes more financial sense to market, otherwise....

One thing that's definitely true is that it's hard if not impossible to take this car out for a joyride... due to range issues. I live near Charlotte and the best place for a driving trip is obviously to Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most beautiful places to drive in the world, especially near the Smoky Mountains. However, can't get there and back... so can't do it for now... According to Tesla website, an Asheville supercharger is expected in 2015. Now when (and if) that's completed, first place I ll go will be BRP.

However if you are in CA, NE, or Florida, there are enough SCs that you can pretty much drive the car around pretty easily.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced "Ludicrous Mode"

Musk announced a new "Ludicrous Mode" upgrade which will propel the car from 0-60 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds. The upgrade means that the car will now reach 155 miles per hour in 20% less time than before.

New buyers will have to shell out an extra $10,000 for the upgrade, which improves the vehicle's acceleration by 10% to 1.1 Gs.

Ludicrous Mode will also be offered on the Model X, which may get from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. Musk claims "that's mad for an SUV."

Upgraded battery improves vehicle range
Other improvements concern range, an ever-present issue for electric cars. Model S buyers can now order their car with an upgraded 90 kwH battery pack for $3,000. The higher capacity is due to improved cell chemistry, including the use of silicon in the anode.

The upgrade will allow up to 15 miles of extra range, taking the longest range 85D up to nearly 300 miles of highway range. Such a distance is an important milestone for an electric vehicle.

Improvements to the battery are also important for the upcoming Model X crossover vehicle, which is bigger and heavier than the existing Model S.

Discount announced for cheapest Model S
Musk also announced a discount on the Model 70D, which will now sell for $70,000, a discount of $5,000 over the original. The news is sure to be welcomed by investors.

Investors and prospective buyers will have been pleased by the announcements, but existing owners were expecting to hear more about the planned software upgrade to version 7.0, which will include autonomous driving features. Musk claims that testing is being carried out every day.

Musk was also asked about a new roadster model. He said that it should be finished this month or next, then the roadster will go into production, and the first deliveries should be made later next month.

Not a discount on the 70D, but instead a single motor S70, with slightly less HP, 10 less miles in range and 5.5 to 60.

So now there are 70, 70D, 85, 85D, each $5000 apart.

For the 85's one can spend 3000 more to upgrade to 90, which provides 13.5 additional miles of range.

For P85D, you can also spend 3000 to get 5% more range, but then you can spend 10000 more in addition to the 3000 to get the ludicrous mode.

Basically now there are more models:
70 starts at 70k, 230 range, 5.5s
70D at 75k, 240 range, 5.2s
85 at 80k, 265 range, 5.4s
90 at 83k, 278 range, 5.4s
85D at 85k, 270 range, 4.2s
90D at 88k, 283 range, 4.2s
P85D at 105k, 253 range, 3.1s
P90D at 118k, 266 range, 2.8s

No need to worry about congestion at the "pump" when most owners will be starting their days with 200+ miles of range. The only people you'll encounter are the few people who are doing more miles than that in a day for whatever reason (long trip, forgot to plug in previous night, etc).

The majority of users will likely go weeks/months in between visits to public charging stations.

I actually like the way a traditional gasoline engine delivers it's power in a non-linear fashion as well as the noises it makes along the way.
