New to Me 2011 135i 6MT
I just acquired my 1-er and was admiring pictures of others.
I noticed that some cars have an extra cup holder mounted next to the shift lever. I was able to determine the part number, 51160443082K, was given an installation line drawing (not instructions), and told that it fits the 6MT console. But what I cannot determine is whether it actually does fit. Does anyone have experience with this? TIA! ArneDarvin |

You need the console with the slot. The slide in cup holder was provided with the BMW navigation system option as the control knob sat in place of one of the cup holders. You can modify your console and add the slide in holder, check realoem under vehicle trim for the part numbers.
Some cars (mine was one) had the cup holder included without the Nav system, due to a BMW ordering system feature (bug?) If the car was originally ordered by the dealer with the Nav function, then someone (me) comes along and changes the order to not include Nav, their build system couldn't roll back the extra cup holder. A little trivia for your reading enjoyment. |

Welcome and congrats on owning one of the best cars to daily drive ever (my biased opinion but it's irrelevant).

Unfortunately I don't daily drive. I've been WFH for several years now. My 1er will be my weekend toy with occasional errands during the week. But my joy increases every time I get behind the wheel. ETA: My name is ArneDarvin and I am a 1addict. |

The cup holder is available on Amazon for relatively cheap (less than $50) and the installation is pretty easy. There's a diy around here somewhere, but you basically remove the center plastic use a template that comes with the holder to cut an opening in a certain spot, drop a received piece into the hole and screw it in with two screws, re-assemble and done.

I have the cup holder pre-installed, but if it didn't come with my car I don't know if I would go thru the hassle of installing one. It will hold a small/med size cup, but can't hold some of the larger sizes. I have to say, the one in the below the DCT shifter is pretty much useless (small junk holder cuz you can't put a drink in it without lifting the arm rest) too. I'm just saying, I wouldn't remove and cut my console for just a cup holder. That said, I would look to other options, but that's just me.

I talked it over with my copilot and we nixed the idea. Seems to take enough knee space away to make things that are already small even smaller.
But thank you everyone for your wonderful enthusiasm. |

I personally bought one a couple of years ago, but haven't installed it yet. I hear the complaints of it not being useful, but sometimes something is better than nothing. For now, my small hand sanitizer goes in the rear cup holder (no nav for me), and my house keys get dropped into the front one. If I get a drink (coffee or ice coffee, water bottle), the keys get moved to the back one and I can use my front one. Other than that, I just have a massive water bottle that sits in my passenger seat leg extender crevace, but I was hoping maybe the add on one, with one of those adapters to fit hyuge bottles might be my solution. But then again, it's been years and I haven't had the need so, for now it sits in a box lol. |

It fits a large Mickie D's or Burger King soda just fine, do it all the time. No, it won't hold a Big Gulp, but do you need to be THAT hydrated? What car has a cup holder that will hold anything bigger than that, a Canyonero? It's also quite handy to stick my phone in when using Google Maps. Well worth the bit of bother of installing it (getting the console in and out is a PITA), and it's cheap.

Yeah, I like a large insulated coffee cup as I commute 200 miles round trip a couple of times a month that can keep the coffee warm with a lid that doesn't let spill.
