The old cut up manifold into trumpets idea
So really I wanted to see this happen and nobody seems to have attempted it. So I guess I will. Made the manifold, PCV/CCV and evap valve to catch can, some catless headers, and a good tuner accepting the challenge. I'm out of reasons why it won't work, so here it goes. Wish me luck.

Yeah, Bob is the man. He's the only tuner that was willing to touch it. Waiting on Bob's cable to arrive. Headers are cheapies from Mertop racing, but they look solid, welds appear decent, fitment will be known soon. If this actually works, I want to build a 6 into 1 header for it, dreaming. I'm really hoping for a kinda old school staccato sound.

Right, looking to set the fail condition to shut hopefully. If that's a no go for some reason at least it's a six speed and I can clutch in to kill the drive and then shutdown the motor. Sure, it's a tow home at that point but so are plenty of other things.

Have any pictures of your intake trumpets? Did you make a plenum too?
It's a cool idea since we have valvetronic and you don't have to mess with ITBs along with the trumpet/plenum sizing.

1st photo posted, not sure why but it really wants to be upside down. Nothing special for now just a stocker ran through the band saw. Once it works, we'll worry about good looks. Headers go on tonight, intake and flash Saturday morning.

That's super cool I wonder how it would drive. I had thought about doing that with a couple old single stage manifolds I have laying around, which seemingly when they were removed from the engine, their subsequent value was 0 lol. This seemed to perform better than the N54 manifold on the dyno runs they did at BPC.
It could use one of these piper cross filters that would fit all 6 runners like this: |

So the headers and manifold are installed. The ecu has the first flash on it. It runs and revs, sounds awesome, but I've yet to run it under load. All the codes that popped seemed sensible but I'm exercising caution till Bob has a look at the data. Once I get the thumbs up, I'll take it out and push it.

Haven't heard back from Bob yet, but I thought a light test drive shouldn't destroy anything. Across town ran just fine, only used light throttle and stayed under 40mph. Idle is pretty steady and there's no stumble or hesitation as it loads up, feels pretty good. The sound of the intake is pretty sexy. The exhaust is pretty loud, but great growl, did I mention it's loud. We'll sort that out later. Anyway so far so good.

Here's a look. Can somebody explain why my pictures regardless of orientation, post upside down. Tried rotating the originals to no avail. Maybe posting from PC instead of phone?

No plenum plan, all I really wanted was the noise. Once it's trimmed out and proven reliable I'll figure out a way to filter it. As far as runner lengths i figured with the low vacuum inside the manifold in stock trim that the runner length BMW came up with would at least work. I just cut the stock manifold along the stock plenum where the runners separated keeping as much flare as possible. Might do some dyno runs eventually.

I can never think of everything. So, the intake air temp sensor is integrated into the MAF sensor. Would anybody happen to know the pinout from the MAF sensor, so I can hijack the correct wires and hook up a regular IAT sensor. Turner sells some kit to separate the IAT from the MAF, but I'm not scared to cut into the harness and run wires, I just can't find out which ones to grab.

Could you find one of those for sale? New, used. I'd be happy with just the cable. The sensor is cheap.

Thank you much good sir. I finally found a part number and have one on the way. Dumb oversight on my part, I didn't forget about IAT, just assumed since I didn't see it, it was up by the snorkel intake. That's why you don't assume things.
