Sorry, Greg - BMW started using SENSATEC instead of leatherette about halfway through the data gathering process and I never got the build list changed - I did change it on the summary table for you, tho

My data list includes the Canadian coupes as well as the US "is" versions. As I went through all the 2013 coupe builds (1,640 units) one by one, there was alot of crossed eyes by the end of the run, and I can't vouch my data is 100% accurate.

Ya, was weird when I noticed they switched for whatever marketing reason they determined. It's okay, I'm proud of my fake leather. Wish I could have gotten fake contrast stitching with it too though. =( My contrast stitching is the special invisible color. Tis quite rare. Owen has it, too.

As far as I know there was no switch between the leatherette and SensaTec. Leatherette is prety much a synonym for vinyl. SensaTec is a marketing term for the type of vinyl/leatherette BMW uses. Pretty sure that BMW never used the name SensaTec in the US/Canada and just used leatherette in the sales brochures.


Regarding the Canadian 135i M Sport Edition. I don't think it should be lumped in with the 'is'. They are not the same. For one, Canadian cars lacks PPK and the exhaust. Canadian cars were not marked as a separate model like the 135is

Yep. But I have to admit, I really, really like the vinyl/Sensatec/leatherette (or whatever we're calling it ) in my car. At first, I was a bit concerned I wouldn't like it, but I am extremely pleased.

My car came off the lot, so I took it as-is. I would have ordered the leather w/ blue stitching if I built my car, but in hindsight, I feel lucky to have the Sensatec. It's got a really nice, durable, leather-like feel to it. Stiff, but comfortable. Kinda sporty. And I hear it will still look/feel like this many years down the road. I'll post more in 2019 and let you guys know how it's holding up

On a side note, does this mean I'm not #400 anymore? I'm 399? I was gonna put "400" on my license plate. "399" doesn't have the same ring to it.

I actually prefer the leatherette, it's pretty indestructible, easy to care for, and I bet nobody who gets in your car will ever know it's not real leather. Heck, when I found my old 135 for sale, they even listed it as having leather!

I may be the only forum member who seemingly ordered their IS with leatherette and occasionally I go back and forth and second guess that vs the black leather with blue stitching, but I also didn't know at the time of my order that you also got the special floormats to match if you get that leather.

What was your plate going to say? Wonder if my old oregon plate is available in your state - 1FA KND. I miss that plate on my car.

I want to write a letter to BMW NA requesting an "official" confirmation of the number built and would like to use your data as a reference. I think that an official letter will bring great value to our rare USA 135is coupes and convertibles.

I have a feeling I might have a pretty rare car here in Canada, left Germany built exactly the same as the "is" except for the speedo and ashtray delete. Although, I have the PE and PPK2 now, so really the only difference is the badges.
