Are there any quantifiable (measured) improvements published? Why don't BMW suggest this? After all, I'm sure they'd charge 2 x the going rate if it was more than a placebo.

TBH the job isn't difficult at all, just a bit fiddly, with most of the time taken up in disassembly and reassembly. The 1st port took about 25min to clean, the 6th about 5 mins... There are a few great DIY's on the net which I followed to the letter, with a good result. I've only done the job once, about 6 months ago at 175k kms and the car is now a track car, so doesn't do many kms, especially at the moment as the engine is on the other side of the garage from the car...! |

It is recommended by BMW North America that it be done every 30,000 miles. That's why I think it's strange that most Australian BMW dealerships don't even seem to know of the process and don't offer it. EDIT: Here's a dyno before/after. Remove the space in spool street. https://bmw.spool street.com/threads/n54-walnut-blast-before-after-dyno.1247/ Last edited by Dat Aus; 03-15-2017 at 07:14 AM.. |

Hmmmm.....those "after" power and torque numbers at the wheels exceed the factory figures at the flywheel. Something a bit weird happening there.

I have walnut blasted many cars you definitely feel a difference in idle smoothness. I have never done a walnut blast and the owner not noticing a difference. At 147k kms the inlet valves will be absolutely caked in carbon buildup. Smoother idle and more power in the mid to high rpms is noticeable.

Had a chat to an employee at Perth 3MW today, apparently he was in the middle of a walnut blast as I rang! It was nice to speak with someone who actually knew what they were talking about. He said they charge $795 for the service.
So far I have been given the following quotes: RAMP Auto Group - $880 (Soda Blasting) BMTechnics - $695 (Walnut Blasting) BMW (hire in a tech) - $800-$1000 (Walnut Blasting) Perth 3MW - $795 (Walnut Blasting) Still heard nothing from Galvsport.... |

Hi mate, sorry I just saw this thread I haven't been active with car forums for a long time now. Galvsport did mine and it was around $500-600 from memory. Best to give them a call again, alternatively send them a FB message or email. They get a lot of phone enquiries during the day and you must of contacted them during peak Racewars season.
For the record this was me. https://www.facebook.com/Galvsport/p...4353385254798/ |
