N55 PE installed Issues, or I'm going Cray Cray..
So I had the perf exhaust installed two days ago..
I noticed the gurgle is gone on deceleration now, (really have to try hard to get that gurgle decel than before) and while driving at low rpms I really have to listen to hear the exhaust.. Its definitely louder at cold start up, but when warmed up it completely silences, only to hear engine noise. I asked my SA, if they installed the full PE and he said yeah. I dunno if I'm going crazy, am I?! |

Oh I definitely hear it at throttle up, and then when crusing at low rpms it turns to a ricer sound bee humming-like....
Maybe cause I don't have the PPK? That does explain the lack of gurgle.. |

yes quiet once warm. use your right foot a little more and itll give you a good return. the "full" PE is an axle back...imo i would have gone for something louder and less expensive (and better) like berk

+2. I still think its too quiet in my own opinion...even after I had my PE on my car for 2000k miles it was not what I wanted for sound.
That being said it definitely deepened in tone as it sooted up

I had the "ricer" buzzing sound initially when I installed my Berk axle-back. I hated it, but was determined to stick with it to see if I could get used to it, mostly because of the costs I've already paid for it. However, after a few hundred miles, the exhaust has really changed. Give it time, let the exhaust "break-in" a little bit. And BTW, the PPK tune does have an effect on the burbles on overrun and revving. That was actually one of the incentives when BMW was advertising it during their "great PPK give away" not that long ago. They were selling the tune half off, I jumped on it. The features of the PPK tune was an increase in burble, which is true. It took awhile for my Berk exhaust to get that burble back. Now that it's broken in, all it does is burble, lol. My Berk exhaust lost the burble for awhile and that drove me nuts. I'm glad it's back. Also, on initial startup, the car doesn't burble at all. I have to let it warm up a bit before getting the burbles and pops when revving. |

I'm not sure if my Berk had the gurgle when I first got it, but a week or so in I remember thinking, "this exhaust doesn't gurgle or pop at all, weird". Now it does (a month or 2 later), not quite as loud as I'd like, but definitely there. Maybe will get more pronounced over time.

Your PE should definitely not sound "buzzy" or anything other than deep and throaty. I would get the install checked out.

The PE is quiet when you don't accelerate so you don't have any drone. Rev it up or accelerate and it can get really loud . Keep in mind the cabin is very well insulated from sound too, so do your checks windows down.
Also, as the other said, wait for several hundred miles, the sound will change after a while. The burbles may also come back. |

I think thats why I'm so paranoid.
When I acc or rev higher I expected a huge noticable sound, but only barely hear it.. and this is with the windows down.. Also note, as soon as I pull out of my garage, my car goes looses all growl, likes its been silenced... Quote:

Did you have any "other" work done with your PE install? Maybe your dealer updated your engine SW, and neutered your car. You would not be the first.

Power Kit Highlights: “Exhaust Burble” sound during engine overrun conditions (new feature only applicable to Power Kits installed on 135i and 335i vehicles with the N55 engine using ISTA/P 2.43 or higher). Thanks!, -Raul |

Well... IF your car had its SW flashed to bmw's neutered SW... you will notice much less gurgle and popping. The engine will run very quietly at idle(no ticking noises (injectors) and a loss of throttle response. Basically you will have to press down the throttle pedal more than half way to get the same performance you had before the SW update at 1/5 throttle. The engine will have more lag bc the wastegates are open more now.
I just had a PE installed on my N54 - and I LOVE IT!! It pops and grumbles a lot. Its quite entertaining. Really sounds great. Its quiet at part throttle with the windows up... but when you get on it (WOT) the engine really screams. LOVE IT!!! Sounds awesome! Dackel

So there's a new update with the N55's where they neuter our cars?
I got my car in May and it sounded fine. After the PE install it doesn't sound as good, exluding the PE sound.. I can hear the gurgles but no where near like I used to, also I randomly hear the downshifts, sometimes I can hear them, and sometimes I cant. Also to note: Am I suppose to smell a weird burning from the car? Like new break in smell but it seems I smell it all the time now, like its coming from the exhaust. Never smelled it before the PE install... |

I just had the PE installed two days ago and the difference between the stock exhaust and the PE is night and day for me. It's almost too loud for me. It sounds pretty exotic, growly and not too low. I do have drone at 2k RPMs, I can live with it, but hoping it settles down after some miles.
Pops and burbles are more noticeable, but the amount it pops and burbles has not increased, they're just louder. Also, no smells. |

Did your dealer install the y-pipe, to delete the mid pipe resonator? Time to look under your car. Quote:

I had that mentality too, still do a little bit. But there is an older M5 around town here that is running a race exhaust setup and it's pretty damn loud. Sounds epic, believe me, but might be a little too loud for everyday use for me. I wouldn't mind something in the middle between that and my Berk Street though. I keep thinking that the Berk Street may be a little too quiet for me. Hoping Berk mids might liven it up a bit. |
