rotor replacement options m sport pack?

So I recently replaced the front brake pads on my 134i w/m sport pack because they were squealing. After replacement it stopped for a few days then started again. I'm thinking its because I have rust on the rotors but not sure.

What are some rotor replacement options out there for OEM size rotors. I dont want to do a big brake kit or anything like that, I think the brakes are good as it is.

Couple questions.
  • You have a 135i so you must have the brembos right?
  • What pads did you replace the originals with?
  • You said you have rust on your rotors - is it just around the edges or is it on the biting surface as well?

Depending on the mileage, you should've probably just replaced the rotors at the same time. Bedding pads to new rotors is ideal. Did you scour/scuff the original rotors to help the pads bed into them and wear the coating off the pads?

From what I can see, BMW's with OE pads are notorious for brake noise, I remember even seeing a notice to this effect in the Service department during one of my visits on my X5. My E82 still has OEM brakes (replacing in a month or two) and the brakes are very squeaky. I've got the MPBK on my X5 with Carbotech pads, they're low dust but noisy at low speeds or light application (squeaks).

For OE size replacement rotors you have a few common options:

-Zimmerman blanks
-BMW OE blanks
-BMW M Performance Slotted / Drilled (slotted / dimpled rears)
-ECS 2-piece Slotted / Drilled fronts

Check the brakes and suspension forum, lots of good information there.

I replaced them with the OEM pads, car has about 27k miles on it. When I replaced the pads the old pads were pretty low so I thought for sure that would fix the squeals.

Squealing pads typically occur because they're vibrating against the rotor and or caliper piston, not because they're low or the rotors are rusty (?). Usually when installing new pads, it's recommended to coat the contact surface on the back of the pad with some kind of anti-squeal compound. Did you do that when you replaced them?

Rust on rotors isn't doing it. Pads scrape clean the area they contact.

Do a good bedding. Look up a general bedding procedure. Basically it involves many hard slows from about 70 mph to 5 mph in rapid succession.

Since you didn't replace the rotors, the pads are not formed to their surface and will need an aggressive bedding process.

It's worth a shot, here's a good link on the procedure:

Properly rinsing the brakes with water when washing the car also helps with brake squeal. I've found out that when they're dirty, they tend to squeal.

I never have any squeeking. Obviously bedding is your 1st action. Secondly as suggested above, coat the back side of each pad with "Noise Free" (Bav Auto), Permatex Disc Brake Quiet or similar product.

I changed to r1 concept cross drilled / slotted rotors. It didn't stop the squeal. The squealing did go away when I stopped using the parking brake.

Funny you should say that, I started not using the parking brake and found the squealing to be less than when I do.

The parking brake is likely not adjusted well, it's actually a fairly common issue.

I have squealing from the rear brakes (I think). I'll try the successive hard braking and report back.

I just ordered a set of ECS 2-piece slotted/drilled rotors (front), ECS slotted/drilled rears, and Carbotech 1521 pads. I'll report back once I throw them on. I'm looking forward to being rid of the excessive brake dust on the BMW OE (Textar) pads.
