I suppose the other thing to consider is the use of Betalink which is what BMW suggests for spoiler installation. My understanding is that the stuff is essentially permanent and will damage paint if removed -- but that still sounds better than seeing the splitter in the rear view mirror, depending on how committed you are to having a front splitter.

I think thats a good question for all us 1M owners... to mod or not to mod? right? Everything I have done to my car is easily reversible. I want to be able to make the car 100% OE again should i choose. So betalink wont work for me... but good suggestion though!

I’m thinking install - must be sqeuuuuuky clean. Have had mine twice that speed with no issues. With car lowered as well, you have to watch out for everything😲

So, question for all of you...I get that the lip looks awesome However, is it necessary?

Does it perform a function that makes the car faster? Better? More aerodynamic? Or is it simply for aesthetics?

Primarily looks and negligible aero. Maybe looks faster.

I think its really just for looks. However, on my GT4 i can tell you that adjusting the front and rear aero did make a difference. Not that this car is in that same vane... but one thing that i find interesting is that back in 2011, BMW still was in F1 and they had access to wind tunnel testing. From what I understand, the M3 and this car were both tested in the wind tunnel for performance. so its probably perfect from the factory. HOWEVER, i just love the look of a spoiler.

Most manufacturers have wind tunnels or rent local ones. BMW has their own, not sure when it was built initially or upgraded. BMW Sauber's wind tunnel is in Switzerland, and I doubt they ever put a road car in it. Ever.

Cars really need a flat bottom/sealed underbody to get significant aero gains from a splitter. Good road legal examples are the R34 GTR, and even better, any modern Ferrari like the F360.

That may be true... however this article seems to suggest that BMW started testing in 09. Maybe they were using someone elses tunnel to that point?

either way, I am glad they do it.

I have an update folks....
I ended up getting a second Slek lip. They worked with me to make it as right as they could. I appreciate it... However a couple of observations:

1) this time i went with the 1x1 weave. I noticed this lip had a slightly different design. It had both holes on the edges where the other only had 1. So right there, this lip is should be more stable.
2) i also think it might weigh just a smige more... but thats me freeballing that one. just based on holding it from what i remember of the first lip.
3) i like the 1x1 weave more. its darker which works better for me considering i have a black 1M.

i also ended up adding more 3M Adhesive tape because I just didnt fully trust it. I also cut out 2 more bolt holes towards the front and added more support. let me tell you, this thing feels like its fused to that bumper now. so... fingers crossed... i shouldnt have any more issues... but time will tell.

thoughts?

the new lip is much more stable... however, i didnt take any chances... i added 3 more bolts towards the front of the lip. I also put much more tape on it. so far, so good. i have been fast enough where i was nail biting a bit... but it seems solid now. ill update if it ever fails.
