2012 128i > 2018 320i
Long story short, my loaner car was a 2018 320i, and in no way shape or form does it compare to my 1er.
The 1 series is such a completely different feel and I fell in love with my car again, just like the first day I drove off the lot with it. I can’t imagine what driving a 135i, 1M or M2 feels like, but right about now, I found a new respect for my car. Just thought I’d share. Has anyone else rekindled their passion for their 1 or am I only “1”? |

The 320i is a lot of fun to drive, especially if it's a loaner car

Don't be jealous of a 135i. I am selling mine to go back to the 128i.
The huge HP and torque are fun but the joy of running it up through the gears is gone since it is going way too fast NOW. Now if I had an autobahn in the back yard it would be great... Car sold yesterday pending buyer getting funding. Now the search for the 128i 6MT M sport light color on Koral begins.

When my search for the perfect 1er started, I was hoping to find a 128i 6MT with minimal options, but failed.
I drove a couple of them and liked them, but either the mileage was too high or the condition wasn't quite what I wanted. Finding any manual BMW with low mileage around here is quite difficult so when I happened upon this 135i I decided to make the trip to the dealer to check it out. In terms of options it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it was pretty darn close - super low miles AND a manual - so I bought it. The thing is, if you drive it at partial throttle it behaves just like the 128i. You can drive it slow and still enjoy rowing through the gears. Except at WOT 128i comes nowhere close to what this car can do. To me it felt vastly superior and so I bought it. Having said that, had I found a perfect 128i in the first place, I would have enjoyed it just the same, I am pretty certain of it. A few months later I test drove a 6MT M235i expecting to love it. But I did not. The only reason to possibly trade my car for it was its remaining factory warranty. That was not enough of a reason though. And more importantly, that test drive made me love my 1er even more. And so far she's been loving me right back. Last edited by vinylengraver; 11-22-2017 at 09:39 PM.. |

I was actually window shopping an M235i/M2 before I began looking at the 1er and was expecting to be blown away but my impression of the 2er was kinda ‘meh’ after the test drive. Fast for sure but kinda stale like most newer cars. The 1er just feels right (size, feedback, etc). I would keep these cars as long as you can since there is not anything on the market that can replace them!

I wasn't crazy about the m235. Its fast and all but my 128 just feels like more fun. I also don't really care for all the electronic gizmos that you get in the 2ers. I just want a simple loud car with a stereo i can hear over top of it.

100% agreement. I just had a 330i xdrive for a week as a loaner. Nice car, and the turbo-4 puts out good power from stupid-low RPM. It sounds like a diesel at startup, and never does away with that instudtial 4-banger thrum. I averaged 28mpg driving in the same manner as my 128i 6-speed which gets 26-ish. Not the 36mpg that they show on the window sticker. But the steering was the part I disliked the most, its weird. It weights up oddly when you start to push the car, has no feel on center, and you never seem to know how much force its going to take to get where you want to go. All in all, the 330i a great cruiser, and decent back road driver at a moderateclip, but the 1 is the superior driver. I has happy to have my car back. The 330i doesn't even land that well. |
