N52 engine malfunction?

So I was just sitting in my car in park when out of nowhere my engine revs up and a engine malfunction pops up my car has 53k miles so I was wondering if maybe the car was being dumb so I turned it off and turned it back off and everything was normal no light and I drove it kinda hard to test if the light would come on but nothing could it be just a false alarm? Any thoughts anyone had similar experiences?

How high did it rev? Are we talking vacuum leak or WOT bouncing off the rev limiter?

A code should be stored. Gotta check it.

It reved up to around 2-3k maybe 4 not sure happened quickly and I have been having these random idle drops before in the city but I always thought it was how hot It was outside since here in california it's like 105 degrees

That’s more than any physical issue like a vacuum leak. It has to be computer related. You need a code reader ASAP before it happens again.

On older e36s, the TPS (throttle position switch/sensor) would go out and the things would rev away. The plastic gears in the switch would deteriorate or the sensor would just fail over time. Also, is the car modified? Maybe this could be it? I agree with Thunderguts that you should definitely read the code if it threw one. It is, after all, the car's way of screaming for help. Good luck my friend!

Mine did that and threw a code for a bad coil. I replaced all six and the plugs (~$150) and the problem was solved in about an hour. Easy fix.
