BMW going "modern-retro" with the 1?

Roundel reports this month that an all-new 1 series coupe will be out in 2011. They say it will be even closer to the original 2002, including round tail lights! I guess they are going "modern-retro" like they did with the MINI. :w00t:

that methodology has worked fairly well for the Beetle, Mini, Mustangs, and probably quite a few more cars to come. might as well get while the gettin is good.

please note the utter fail of the pontiac gto which didnt look enough like the original, lacked options that most people want, and was overpriced.

Roundel is notoriously wrong about future models. Although I do expect a new 1 series to be introduced are 2011, which would be BMW's standard 7 years per series run. I doubt they have the inside scoop on a car that is soooo far from production. Even if they did, things can most assuredly change in the next 4 years.

2011, like Integrator and larryn said sounds right.

But the retro thing...sorry, I'm sick to death of it.
If the next 1-er stays small and remains somewhat true to the spirit of the
2002...fine; that's what attracted me to the car in the first place.

The fondness designers have in looking back to historical models for viusual inspiration makes a lot of sense but I am tired of "updated" designs that come off more as a bankrupt creativity than a heartfelt and timely nod to yesterday.

JMays became known at VW/Audi and then at Ford for graverobbing...Beetle, T-Bird and it finally got him canned...and rightly so.

Bangle has always embraced the new. Retro seems diametrically opposed to what he and BMW's design team has come up with.
I look for BMW to bring me something that is new, cutting edge, challenging.
Not another lame-ass pastiche from the past.

If it will make them money, I wouldn't consider it out of the question.

The market shows that lots of people like buying these modern-retro cars. Although, something like a rehash 2002 has a much more niche market than say a Ford Mustang, so it might not be worth it.

If they just stuck with the spirit of the old car (light, fun, etc) they could have a winner.

She needs to remove those pastiches so we can see what's underneath!

Probably ecquivalent in value to Mark Fields' mullet.
How is it that these guys end up at Ford?

That's twice in 24 hours that the word 'mullet' has come up in relation to a posting of mine. If y'all don't watch it, I'm going to have Jeweline get my Camaro off'n the cinder blocks in front of my trailer-home/love-shack/meth-lab outt'n here in Indy-pendence and comes after y'all.

I suspect the backdate is 2003/2004 from the original intro of the 1-er hatch.
They could delay the simulataneous release of the new coupe and wring out another year or two on it. Perhaps that would be smart.

Right now the thought of going through all of this drama again in 4 years makes my stomach boil.

I'd love to see model that is a real throwback to the 2002. My '75 is pretty timeless looking, and to capture its essense using modern technology and design would be quite the ride.

They had the right designer for the MINI and hit a grand slam, it's too bad he's no longer with BMW...
