what oil does 135i use?

I'm afraid I went overboard with the Costco special on Mobil 1 5W30 and bought too many cases of it.
I have ordered a 135i and will be selling my 330i soon.
Will I be able to use the oil I have or should I just give it to the buyer of my car?

You can use ANY oil as long as it says: "BMW long life-1" or "BMW long life-4", in 0w40, 0w30, or 5w30.

There are only four different oils sold in the USA that meet that spec. The ONLY mobil-1 oil to meets that spec is their "0w40 european blend" oil. Chances are your oil does not meet this spec.


Most people just use the BMW Castrol full synthetic oil sold thru BMW dealers. You can buy an oil change kit (7 qts and oil filter) disounted from United or Tischer for about $70.

I personally would use engine oil vs..say cooking...I kid....Dack's got it all wrapped up, I just needed to send out some love and humor.....this before all the peeps out there start blasting you for not doing a search or such and such.... BTW, I'm not new to BMW. I'm coming from an e46.
That's exactly the same situation for the old M54 engine. So nothing has changed in 10 years of technological advancement by BMW?

Here's the thing though... I speculate that "BMW long life-1" spec is required for the oil to last the prescribed 15K (or is it 20K now in the N55?) change interval.
Even if the oil can last that long, I don't think the filter does. So I have always changed oil mid interval.
With that frequency, I don't think the "BMW long life-1" is so important, as long as it's fully synthetic.
What's the collective opinion on this?

^^Due to the high sulfur content in US fuels... you should ONLY use a BMW LL-1 oil. Btw... it looks like BMW LL-4 can be used where BMW LL-1 is specified, but not vice versa!

I don't buy into BMW long (no)service intervals. I change my oil every 6K miles or so or every three months. You will see once you change your engine's oil how dirty and black and watered down it is from fuel dilution. That is why I go with short OCI's (oil change intervals). I have also changed my trans and diff fluids as well as brake fluid.

Those are all good habits.
At least it doesn't hurt to change the oil more frequently than specified.
Just a note, for accuracy... the black color of used oil is more a characteristic of synthetic oils than an indication of how dirty it is. So I've read...

^^I don't know. I just don't like seeing really black colored oil in a gasoline engine. For diesels, yes - but not for gas engines. I also don't like how my oil always has a strong odor of fuel in it - when I change it. I mostly drive autobahn trips of 30 minutes or longer. So you would think I would not have so much fuel odor in my oil. Then you start to think that bc of the really long OCI's BMW says to go by... and the carbon buildup problems that Direct Injection motors suffer from... these long OCI are a bad idea - if you ask me. I would rather pay a little bit more with short OCI's then deal with problems down the road. Oil is cheaper than a new engine.

I read somewhere that the Molly oil is good stuff.

With the N55 engine if you take your oil cap off, you can take a nice peep inside the engine and see some of the internals. I did that the other day and my oil didn't look bad for 9600 miles, still some brown honey color. I got my oil change appt schedule for 10/4/11.

No need to worry. Use the oil you have purchased in your new 135i. However, you must drop the OCI down to 4K-5K miles. I use 0w-30 GC and Royal Purple 5w-30 and change it every 3.5K due to my 12mile round trip work commute.
Dont buy in to the "must use BMW syn oil" unless you gonna play by there rules of 15k miles OCI's.

BMW still includes free oil changes for 4 years, yes?
I plan to take full advantage of that.
In between their changes, I'll just throw in one of my own (without resetting the counter).
Will that work like it did in the e46 or have they gone so fancy that the counter will sense the fresh oil and automatically reset itself?

With BMW's free service plan... you will get four free oil changes.

And Yea... the oil level sensor can also detect the oil quality and changes the oil change count down acordingly. But it will still go off for time as well as miles driven since the last oil change.

Nah, the whole 20k thing was me messin with Dack...Most of us adjust our oil changes from the BMW 15k motto. I personally do about every 7,500. Not to mention us here in the land over the big pond don't receive any of the free maintainance as the state side 1er's. I do agree that the oil may not be "too" suspect but I believe the filters would be the weak spot.

I honestly dont think it matters if your not trying to make your oil last 15k miles. I use 5w-30 castro edge full synthetic and have actually had lower oil temps. Change it like every normal car at 5k and have no issues.

Yea... I saw that last week over here(in Germany) too. BUT... Castrol EDGE Professional with Fluid Strength Technology (FST) is rated BMW LL-1, not LL-4 like I need over here in DE.

I quickly bought a couple of old 5L jugs of RS Edge 0w40 (LL-4) for now. I'm not sure what I will do in the future. I might just switch over to the BMW's dealer sold synthtic oil LL-4 also. I found a place online that sells that for 7 euros per liter.

I knew it checked oil level,but dang, didn't know it checked oil quality. Guess I better quit using recycled oil then LOL. Like alot of owners I just get the oil change kit from Tischer.Go about 5-6000 mi. Back when I was messing with Jap turbo cars we would use oils like amsoil,valoline which had oils specially formulated for turbo engines. Guess they had additives which helped with heat break down. Thanks for the oil sensor info. Dang, these cars got more eletrontics than the space shuttle.

I just recieved my Castrol RS Edge 0w40 LL-4 oil today! Looks like they still had some of the old stock left. When they run out I might just start to use the BMW dealer oil - sold over here in DE. These guys also sell it and its dirt cheap at 7 euros vs the dealer at 23 to 33 euros PER liter!

47 euros for 1 - 5L jug plus 1 1L bottle. Not a bad deal!!

I read some where :

Synthetic is better than petrolium oils as synthetic softens the seals and keeps them good. The Petrolium oils have a deposit that sticks to the seals and cause them to leak......

Also the synthetic oils clean the engine ..thus are better.....

Can any one verify the above......

So any synthetic oil which is 0-40w,5-40w, 5-30w should be good.......

Am i right guys......
