Question Engine problem after delayed oil change

Hey all,

I’ve just taken my E82 135i in for service at BMW Dubai (AGMC) and was told that the oil change was approx 4000km overdue.

Without even inspecting the car I was advised that there will probably be damage to the engine which will need repair rather than just a normal oil change. Does this sound realistic or is this a preemptive strike to try and squeeze some extra cash out of me?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'd say a load of BS from that stealer!

Australian delivered 135's aren't scheduled for their first oil change until about 25,000 km. An additional 4k km wouldn't make much difference to an interval like that. Mind, most people with any mechanical sympathy change their oil well before 25k km!

Oil is far more advanced today than it was 20 years ago. I have no doubt you could stretch oil changes by quite a bit and still be fine.

Any damage due to a minor difference in oil change interval is subtle and cumulative. In other words, no detectable damage for one extra long oil change interval early in life. If you follow the manufacturers recommendations or go a bit longer, I would not want your car after 100,000 miles but up to around that point, you would have to do tests to find a difference - it should run pretty much normally. It depends some how hard you were on the car.

I would expect the dealer to make note of it but not to try and claim any immediate damage. If there is a later problem that lubrication might have been involved, then this may come up again.

Was the engine subject to extreme conditions, temperature, excessive revving or being driven under racing conditions? Was it giving a low oil warning?

If not, I wouldn't really worry about the engine, but I would be concerned about that dealer.

Exactly. If there were no warning there should be no damage.

But, OP, didn't you see a dash message about overdue service for the past 4000 kms?
