Did I just read in that thread that those turbos will not work with Dinan? If not, what's the point?

The turbo's wont make the power if the tune is not proper.

It has to be a custom tune along with the upgraded fuel system that the company is figuring out. I'll take custom tunes over "off the shelf" tunes any day. Once we have some good ways to tune on the fly, they will be far better than any chip or re-flash.

The Dinan tune would not be proper. You do not install larger turbos and run a 384 crank horsepower tune.

Am I the only one that thinks upgrading the turbos is a bad choice? :iono:

oh man, this is making me sweat. i had 500hp on my single turbo SRT and it was nuts and completely stupid to try and drive with the front wheels. this would be very nice in the 135i with rear wheel drive. this is going to be expensive.

I am aware that the turbos will require a custom tune.

The majority of people out wont want a 'custom tune', everyone likes PnP devices so selling these turbos without a tuning solution is pointless.

from the looks of it, the wheels are at least 1/4" bigger than stock. I wonder how that would affect the lag. Bigger turbo gives more lag for sure, but how much?

I wonder if it will still have that flat torque curve from 1400-5000+ RPM, and as akak1997 says how good/bad is the lag

Right now, yes. This is something I won't be considering until my warrantee has expired and we know that 400-500rwhp can be supported reliably. Pretty much let the guys with $$$ to put into R&D and blow up some stuff and work the kinks out for the power hungry guys.

Don't quote me but I remember reading something about 500rpm (yes 500) in that thread, meaning full boost 500rpm's later I think. I have to find it again. There you go! >>> http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...5&postcount=26

As of right now no one knows, but I can guess. There probably will be a slight lag, but I think the torque curve will be better then our cars stock/tuned(especially for the high boost tunes). The high boost tunes/race tunes have the boost taper off high in the rpm range to prevent damage to the car, mainly the turbos. Somewhere in that thread ASR said that boost will be maintained throughout, because the turbos are stronger. Also no boost spikes!

The car will need to be put on a dyno and tuned after everything is in place. A turbo upgrade IS NOT plug and play. It's a serious upgrade and the tuning is a major part of it.

Custom tunes are extremly common, if not universal for people looking at these kind of power upgrades.

Though I am not interested in this for my own car, I am interested in it being done. I like the warranty and paid a premium (new car price) to have it, so I will be keeping my car stock for the near future. However, in a few years when the warranty is gone and I would like a monster of a little car, the 1 might set up nicely to be just that.

Exactly. Big power and PnP tune don't go hand in hand. For the people that only want plug and play and don't want custom tuning, which doesn't make sense because custom tuning is FAR BETTER than PnP, then stick with your stock stuff.
